Why was Hopkins beating Trinidad considered such a big win for Hopkins?

1 - Tito was a hot favourite to beat Hopkins

2 - It was the final of Don King's big MW tournament

    3 - It was a unification fight

    4 - Tito was 40-0 (34)

    5 - Tito was p4p#2

6 - Tito was WBA champion

7 - Tito had annihilated Fernando Vargas and William Joppy in his last 2

8 - If Tito won, he was rumoured to be in line for a superfight with Roy Jones at 168

    9 - And Hopkins took Tito's zero

10 - He stopped him into the bargain

11 - And he won more or less every round

12 - It was one of the best all-round boxing displays of the era

13 - Hopkins was 36 at the time, considered old

I could go on. It was one of the greatest victories of the age. :good

Trindad and DLH. Most others were full sized middleweights.

    factors to consider:

    Hopkins was the underdog

Trinidad was in the top P4P regardless of weight class

Hopkins had never really been in the spotlight, i mean...this dude won his titles in the ghetto somewhere in Ecuador

The skill he had to break down Trinidad was sublime.

So if you put these factors together they outweigh the fact that Trinidad was moving up in weight, it may not be fair but thats how Boxing works and how people perceive Boxing to be.
Im pretty sure il show the fight to my kids one day, all the education they need before setting off in life

Yeah i got that wrong i just checked

    BUT

He was knocked down TWICE and somehow pulled off a draw in Mercado's backyard. Doesnt that remind you off another fight that happened recently?
