You dont know what you were watching if you think hopkins was just trying to survive. Hopkins of all people could have made it real ugly, with a lot of holding, not to mention flat out running (see may maidana round 12) and could have done a lot of spoiling if his goal was just to survive.

But hopkins threw more punches in the 10th then he did any round previous in the fight, same in the 11th, and threw his fight high output in the 12th, while also taking a beating.

Seeing an old man who knows he has nothing left to offer his opponent but keeps calculating and refuses to go away is not the same as seeing a fighter submit.

If hopkins submitted and was fighting purely to survive you would have seen a totally different last couple of rounds. What you saw was an old fighter who couldnt execute what he wanted to do due to the level and danger of the opponent in front of him.

Hopkins did attempt to take the fight on the inside and make it ugly by trying to clinch and hold Kovalev's arms, Kovalev very easily took his right arm off the clinch and round housed Hopkins with a shot upside the head, Hopkins knew right then that an ugly fight on the inside was'nt prudent against a man much physically stronger then he was.

At near 50 years of age, Hopkins does'nt have the legs to run a trackmeet, although he did backtrack just about all the way through and in a defensive shell just about throughout.

The only real offensive mounted by Hopkins was the 3 or 4 potshots he landed from the outside for the full 12 rounds, one shot and out because Kovalev would immediately respond.

The only shot Hopkins had in this fight was to make it ugly and hope he could land a big shot in the midst of that ugliness, but he did'nt want to take that risk because more than likely it would have been him laid out and not Kovalev.

Knowing Hopkins he fought the 12th to win it and claim victory.
Its the only round where he took a little bit of a chance, but promptly paid for it. Once Hopkins stuck his tongue out and Kovalev made him pay for it, back went Hopkins into his shell to finish the fight.

Agree with you 100% on the highlighted.

Sorry divac, but getting your assed kicked with no answers isnt going into a shell... and even if hopkins did... that you dont get that he didnt submit regardless, imo you dont recognize what you were watching.

A 50 year old who has no answers, and whos only prideful option is to take his beating, is not submitting, and it was in that vein that people were cheering his toughness and him staying on his feet, and is why he raised his arm.

You dont get that so no need for further discussion. Good night divac im off to bed.

Side note... ask yourself why hopkins crowd was cheering at the end? You think it was because kovalev was beating hopkins ass? it was because hopkins was showing amazing resilience given the context of his situation, and they were taking a moral victory in that... which is similar to what caused hopkins to raise his hand.

Hopkins thought he had judges in his pocket. I guess his master Oscar forgot to bribed them.

Probably because he was out on his feet and didn't know where he was

Because at age 50, he went the distance with the most feared man in boxing.

The teacher asked if anyone knew the answer to 2+2, and Hopkins raised his hand. Other than that, I don't know why he was raising his hand.

This ^. What other reason does he need.

Surely no-one can be saying that he imagined or even pretended that he thought he's won, but the guy soaked up the everything that a brutally powerful young champ could deliver in that final round and somehow stayed on his feet ... just.

He knew he'd been thoroughly outclassed but yet stuck out both a literal and metaphorical tongue and his tormentor, daring him to do his worst as a final act of defiance.

I'd be pretty happy to have survived too, though Hopkins probably took more damage in that final coupla minutes than in the last 5 years of his career.
