Anyone know? In his other 168 fights he was skinny lanky ish look, not the most muscular guy, but in that fight and he was fat and had to boil himself down to make weight, not like at CW or HW where he was fat and didnt have to make weight
He started training at 207 for that fight. He ate himself out of the division which was the worst time as he was fighting the most important fight of his career at the time
It may well have been the condition he entered camp in the first instance. Toney's yo-yoing of weight is legendary.
He stopped training, they did an article about his exibition fights in the lead up to his fight v Jones and highlighted his massive gut, Collins mentioned that when he trained in the same gym as Toney that James would be drinking bottles of coke in between sparring sessions, Steve the former super middle champ would warn Toney that he wasn`t taking his prep or training seriously and Toney would just respond but saying "it`s okay", coke has tons of sugar which turns to fat.
Reminds me of the basketball player Caron Butler, he had a mountain dew obsession that was pretty infamous. He would actually wake up at like 2am and drink I think a mountain dew in the middle of the night every night. "I lost 11 pounds this summer by giving up Mountain Dew. That's right Mountain Dew. A lot of people don't know I'm a Mountain Dew addict so I guess this is my confession. To try and give this up was crazy for me! I was going through withdrawals. I was in the bed sweating. My wife would turn over in the bed and ask "Are you OK?" Honestly, those first two weeks without The Dew [were] the roughest two weeks of my life. I'm talking headaches, sweats and everything. Before that I drank at least six 12-ounce Mountain Dews a day. It was so bad at one point that I had to have a cold one right there at the night stand before I went to bed. I had to get the coasters and let it drip a lil' bit and just have it waiting on me. Come 2 a.m., I'd wake up out of my sleep, I'd pop one open and hear the fizz sound ... and just down it! Then I always had to have another one in the morning when I woke up. Before practice I had one too and before games I would knock back two."
You know Roy got a lot of credit for that win and I'm not certain how much he should have received, there were quite a few fighters who could have beaten that drained corpse of James Toney .
He was not fat, that is ridiculous. He probably wasn't at his best, I will agree to that. You also have to remember that the ultra buff Roy was also moving up in weight and was shredded for the fight. Regardless it was still a great win for Roy and I don't think any version of James Toney beats that Roy Jones. James was all fired up his next fight at Light HW and Montell still beat him. Montell was a really solid fighter but Toney should have been able to beat him. You could argue Toney won but he still should have had an easier time at a weight he was more comfortable with.
James had a comeback fight scheduled in 2015 but it was called off when he couldn’t make heavyweight.
