The Lacy effect carries on and on and on; Gervonta Davis, the Charlo’s, Mike Jones, so many U.S fighters get hyped up off the back of a couple of decent wins over middling fighters.
it was, prime lacy was stopped by a shot 40something. no, one fight doesnt ruin someone. Being crap ruins someone. Being crap is an example of letting one ifght get to you.
course not, kessler would have stopped him with ease. if you look at jeffs career, its the same pattern before and after joe - jeff is fine knocking out bums and those picking up paychecks, but comes unstuck with anyone with some world class ability.
I think not... 4 schoolboy ABAs, 3 Senior ABAs and a record of 112-10 with his last defeat coming when he was 17 or 18. The only reason he did not win an Olympic medal is because of politics within the Welsh ABA, and he was not selected for the GB squad.
I hadn't seen him before he fought Calzaghe then in the buildup they showed some clips of him and I was in shock at how slow and basic he looked, up until then all I'd heard was this was a miniature Mike Tyson and Joe's biggest test, after watching some 'highlights' I knew he was going to get schooled.
Lacy was 209-12. (nearly 100 more wins and only two more losses) Lacy was the 1998 U.S. National Amateur Champion. The 1998 and 1999 PAL Champion. Lacy was also a U.S. Olympian and beat Randy Griffin (who drew with Felix Sturm in a WBO middleweight title fight) to make the team. And he lost in the Olympics to a two-time Olympic medalist who would beat Golovkin for the Gold in 2004. Lacy was a better amateur. Winning three national titles and making the Olympics and scoring 100 more wins was better.
Joe was seen as past his best plus Lacy looked the part big muscles mean looking big hitting the casual fans went for it big stile
Calzaghe last lost as a 17/18 year old, even as an amateur. Lacy lost numerous amateur fights - even into his 20s (I believe that last loss was when he was 23). I think I forgot to mention Calzaghe also won the 3 ABAs at different weights, and also stopped future HW world champ Chris Byrd in the amateurs.
And yet Chris Byrd, who Calzaghe embarrassed and stopped in 1992 got to the final of the 1992 Olympics Middleweight boxing. Yeah....he wouldn't have won a medal.
I don't know what you're arguing. We all know Calzaghe is better than Jeff Lacy. I just said Lacy had a better amateur career. AND HE DID. Lacy won 100 more fights. He won three national championships. He went to the Olympics and lost to a great fighter. Calzaghe's amateur record wasn't as good. He won a 100 FEWER fights. He didn't go to the Olympics. And winning National Championships in the United States in the 1990s was more impressive than winning amateur titles in the UK in the 1990s. It may not be now. It was then. There was a reason why Lacy was expected to win against Calzaghe. But Calzaghe proved against Lacy he was better. And that win took him to the next level. He basically ruined Lacy. All credit to Calzaghe. But going back and saying Calzaghe also had a better amateur career isn't true. Calzaghe didn't.
I never thought much of Lacy, even before he won the championship. I thought their were plenty of holes in his fight game that was exploited by fighters that were nothing special though he did beat them. Lacy never passed my eye test well before his 1st loss.
see now you've written something different from "reason he wasnt selected". And again, beating one guy on one occasion doesnt mean you win in another against another set of guys, and you should know this.
