I'm not talking about those REAL glancing shots that Pac hit him with.
I'm talking solid right hooks and left straights and somehow, he still managed to come forward, roll, and counter Pac with a massive punch.
I can only count 1 counter right hook from Pac that clearly sent JMM back, but there were tons other that connected but didn't pushed him one tiny bit.

I mean, Pac wasn't any less strong for sure, and JMM's face after the match says that Pac landed some big ones.

This is especially true if you watch the fight in real time.

Any mention of PEDs, sourgraping or robberies will be ignored.

This is an honest question from someone who hasn't been to the amateurs and only box as a personal fitness regime and addiction.:bbb

Probably the training regime that was set up for him. They changed things up a lot by the sounds of it. If I had to guess, I'd say they did more work on the neck muscles and core strenght.

Pac wasn't landing as clean, Marquez's movement and counters kept him off balance so he couldn't get leverage

That's interesting. I can distinctly remember him doing this exercise where a weight was hanging on his forehead and he was like pulling it up with his neck and then slowly let it go down again. Repeat, rinse, wash.

Also, his upper body looked like a tank, almost looking bigger than Pac.
That was some excellent ploy by his team, almost nullifying team Pac's plan to focus on speed.

Damn I used to think JMM was only making it interesting by always saying "He and his team is preparing for the fight really hard".
It appears now that it does hold a lot of weight.

He was not landing clean ALL THE TIME.

But he did land some solid ones that somehow JMM managed to absorb without getting off balanced and counter on top of that with a perfect punch.
I mean solid ones that even Mosley wasn't able to just shrug off.

I would post some pics but I'm too tired right now.

I know he landed some but I think Marquez's positioning took the edge of the punches that and he was incredibly focused

I see. Gotta learn more about JMM's positioning and general ring movement.
TBH, JMM's footwork is a puzzle for me.

probably good anticipation? he took pac's left away real good. meanwhile, pac's head was snapping back even when he had his hands up and jmm hit him on the gloves.

I agree, he was perfectly positioned most of the time. I thought Pacquiao wasn't able to land a clean punch.

    Good inputs. Thanks.

I think having fought against Pac for more than 24 rounds already (anticipation) might've played a crucial role as well.

    I'll try to watch Pac-JMM 1 and 2 again and compare.:good

He was circling to Manny's right (his left) to take away Manny's straight left, it also positions himself to land his left jab/hook/uppercut. All the while he is backing up to control distance When Manny moves to his right and comes forward to set up his own left Marquez looks to time the right hand on him. Or alternatively Marquez does the opposite, moving to his own right and forward, putting his lead foot inbetween Manny's feet to land the lead right hand. That's why all the foot stomping happened, Marquez was trying to get his lead foot inside Manny's to land the right hand

It's Marquez' effective weight gain. Marquez weighed in at 150lb. that night and that is the reason why he wasn't seriously getting hurt. Everything has a negative side effect. That weight gain could possibly be the reason why he wasn't attacking Pac. He can't risk to get tired quickly because of his weight gain and get knocked down or worse, ko'd. In my opinion, Marquez really played it smart and with big concerns.

Because Pac never landed anything significant?

Putting the lead foot on the inside for the orthodox fighter isn't necessary to land the right hand per se, because circling left still aligns you own right while alienating the opponent's left, though it may provide a new angle. Whenever Pac was on the defensive, he basically shut down, so I think the foot-stomping had more to do with Marquez and Pacquiao taking turns stepping forward with their lead to start an offensive assault from in front of each other.

Marquez kept a low center of gravity in this fight, so any shots he took were absorbed by his head being in line with his spine and legs which were able to be anchored in the ground upon impact. If you look at the rematch in 2008, the only shots that visibly hurt Marquez were a left he didn't see coming from the side which caught him as he was going for a left hook to the body and knocked him down, and an overhand-left counter Pacquiao used when Marquez came in aggressively with a wide left. He took plenty of other lefts in that fight and it wasn't often his head rocked backwards with those, and he got hit less in this fight than the others.
