Because Baer is underrated, when he came in serious he was a h2h nightmare. His fight with Joe Louis should've been legendary but he broke his right hand and sprained his left wrist.

Possibly one of the greatest raw talents in boxing history. Power, chin, instincts, he had it all. Too bad he was a playboy goofoff.

so that was top level heavyweight boxing in 1933? They look terrible. There are MMA fighters today who could have been boxing champions in that era. Just watched Rivas - Jennings, both of them would have stopped Baer and/or Schmeling within a round or two.

If he doesn't explain that Joe Gans is unskilled because of a couple wild punches 17 rounds into a brawl, and had to throw a fight, while Kownacki is skilled because he beat someone who lost to a 3-4-2 journeyman (he really said this), then who else will?

BitPlayerVesti, you showed us how much you know about boxing when you thought slipping a punch was a lost technique known as the "Wizard Style." That one post told me all I need to know.

I think both Schmeling probably isn't as good H2H and Baer is better H2H than the consensus suggests.

Well, maybe more the Schmeling statement more so.

Baer isn't exactly regarded as a monster H2H.

Schmeling wins next 2 out of 3. Everybody loses.

It’s always perplexed me because Baer was really not that good by any means. Maybe just showed Schmeling was a very good cruiser but not a heavyweight by 1980’s standards. Baer just overpowered him. Nothing special about the win. Just beat him up

One wonders why they hang around a "classic" boxing forum when their only real input is to say the old guys suck and the modern guys are bigger, better and more beautiful.

You realise that Pat M will probably have a couple of kids hanging around his gym who could beat both those guys.
After all he claimed the same after seeing a Harry Greb training video.

 - If only it were that simple. All of us here would be able to persuade the street corner, loitering urchins to take to the gyms and suddenly we'd have the richest raft of boxing talent the sport has ever seen.
