Why Was Mayweather Weighing Two Pounds Heavier Than JMM A Big Deal

The heaviest Marquez has ever been on fightnight is 144lbs, which is 8lbs lighter than Mayweather's heaviest recorded weight on fightnight (because we all know he was heavier vs Mosley but didn't want to be weighed).

The heaviest Pac has ever been is 148.5, which is 4.5lbs heavier than Marquez, so they are closer in size than Marquez and Mayweather were.

Throw in the fact that before fighting Mayweather, Marquez had NEVER fought anyone higher than lightweight, while Floyd had been at welterweight (with one fight at lightmiddle where he weighed in at 150lbs) for what, 4-5 years?

Thus, Mayweather had been functioning two weights higher than Marquez for a number of years before this fight occurred. Mayweather's body had time to grow into welterweight, and he had experience of fighting big natural welters, whereas Marquez's body was not accustomed to carrying that much weight to the weigh-in nor had he any competitive experience of fighting bigger natural welters.

And obviously Marquez and Pacquiao are much closer to each other in all other areas and dimensions of size than Marquez and Mayweather are.

So this is all 'where it came from'.

It was a big deal cause it proves that Mayweather doesn't walk around at 147, and that he drains down to 147(and couldn't drain below 46) and probably should be fighting at 154, this constituted him choosing to fight a 135 pound Marquez as a Cherry pick since Mayweather quite visibly grew so much during his retirement, which was quite evident during the match wear May appeared to be close to 160 pounds, lil Floyd is no longer lil Floyd and the Shane Mosley fight proved that point once more.

The fight would have been called off and Mayweather would have had to forfeit 10% of "his" purse in addition to the contract penalty to Marquez and it would have been split between the commission and Marquez but Marquez agreed to change the contract before the weigh-in to 147. Marquez could have walked away from the fight with 1.1 Million in his pocket. Marquez instead opted to go for the $3.2 Million + the $600K penalty. I say right there being overweight makes it a big deal!

Very true, but Pac hasn't tested positive. Until then, FMJ is ducking Pac.

JMM had to bulk to compete against someone who already had an incredible size and reach advantage nearly two weight classes above the one he topped-out at, and Mayweather didn't even honor the contract.

That blood test to Mosely was just thown in just to make lil floyd, the coward, to be consistent on his "sudenly lily white clean" on unwarranted demand.

    Doubt Mosely would question that.

I don't buy it- why would Ring have access to that while HBO was denied? Nacho Beristein did say he expected Floyd to come in at 152 lbs, but I couldn't find any verification that Floyd even let himself be weighed on fight night.

Floyd looked closer to 160 than 150 in that fight.

The main reasons it was a big deal is that Floyd didn't bother to lose the final 2 lbs, and if he had, it could've affected his performance if they were particularly stubborn to lose. And he waited until right before the fight to raise the contract weight, which was unprofessional.

I still don't think JMM would've won, though.

The Ring did present it as fact, it was stated that Mayweather was 152. I have no way of verifying their claim, I just assume they had it for fact.

For what it's worth, it seems a low figure to me as well. In the Mosley fight, I refuse to believe Floyd was anywhere south of 155, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was around 160.

He clearly looks bigger since he came back from his H(GH)oliday.

Because when all things are taken into account - height, weight, reach, etc - Manny is closer to JMM's size than Floyd is. Naturally, when Floyd and JMM are set off to go and fight in the weight classes they can cut down to, they are two divisions apart (135 and 147). On fight night when both have rehydrated, their difference is then reduced to approximately one/two divisions (10 pounds or so). You also need to remember that Floyd is a solid weltwerweight that's been fighting at that class for a very long time. He's more at home there than JMM.

But with Manny, it's safe to say he can cut down to 140 if he wants to. That's just one division from JMM's. And when they eventually rehydrate, they're practically less than a division apart (3/4 pounds). Their height and reach is similar, too. Which is why I consider both fighters to be relatively the same size.

And before you ask why Pac's lot didn't go for 140...... the reason is because a 145 catchweight makes for a fight where neither guy has to go through the worry and stress about adhering to a weight limit. When Pac trains only thinking about the fight and getting in the best position he can be, he naturally falls below 145.

PS - I have my doubts about Floyd weighing 152. I think he was around 155.

    this.

Mayweather didn't show any respect at all.

Didn't even try to make weight.

I've been a religious body builder/trainer for the longest time now and this:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlngsZKXQ-4[/ame]

Is CLEARLY not the physique of a 5'8" person who only weighs 152lbs.
If he was 5'6", then maybe.

I have tons of respect for Ring magazine, but that's a load of bull if you ask me.

They said that on fightnight, Mayweather was 152 and Marquez was 144. I agree that Mayweather looks considerably more than 8lbs heavier than Marquez in the ring.
