Why was Michael Spinks though as someone who could dethrone Tyson?

From what I've seen, it seems like people thought Michael Spinks was going to give Tyson a run for his money, and I was wondering why. Did people forget that he controversialy squeeked past an old Holmes, and that the only other threat he faced was also a shaddow of his former self? Since I wasn't around at the time, I'd like to learn a little about what was really expected to happen that night.

I wasn't around either but he was the undefeated former undisputed Lightheavyweight champion, former undisputed Heavyweight champion as well. It's not hard to see why he was viewed as a real threat.

On paper it looked like a good match up, but considering the fact that Michael was aging by this point and inactive, along with struggling with the other heavyweights of note, why would he be a threat to prime Mike Tyson?

He was only 31 I think when he fought Tyson, he wasn't old. He hadn't shown real decline in his last few fights so there wasn't a reason for people to say, Spinks is done.

If Spinks somehow beat Tyson, fans would say how this was Spinks at his absolute best, he showed up in fantastic shape, his prime performance blah blah blah.

two big names is all it was and slo to unify the title. the media had to build it up that's their nature. And the public has to believe them. It's their nature to be dumb and never to think they know better than the writers.

As for myself I could see the public was asking to get taken for their money because they didnt recognize it as a mismatch. I didnt think it would go past two.

Only 31, yes, but when would consider he reached his peak? Around 1982-83?

I thought he would make a fight of it based on his wins over Holmes and Cooney but Tyson was @ his peak for that fight and it was down hill after

it was a passing of the tourch i feel. it wasnt a mismatch but it was clear tyson was overwhelming fav. i think spinks was regarded becuase he was unbeaten had an awkward style and was the last line of defence in the ring.

Because Spinks had never been beaten, was considered by far the smartest most versatile fighter Tyson would have faced and had a master strategist like Eddie Futch in his corner. Spinks had always found his way home and it was thought he might pose some stylistic and tactical probs for Tyson. Truth be told i think many hopedhe would test Tyson as much as anything, Tyson had been cutting a swathe.

Some people forget both were "undefeated" fighters and the media was trying to build it up as a "Linear Champion" vs the Belt Champion like
the FOTC Ali vs Frazier fight was promoted.

Tyson was a full-fledge heavyweight and Spinks a blown-up lightheavy.

    Unfortunately it was a blowout.

    Unfortunately it was a blowout,

Holyfield was just as much a blown up light heavy.

It was a rightfully symbolic bout because Spinks had defeated the last undisputed HW champion in Holmes. So the "line" effectively went from Ali to Frazier to Foreman to Ali to Holmes to Spinks to Tyson.
