I was just re-watching Nunn`s performance v Toney and he missed with the jab on the outside often why was this and is this partly why he lost? He couldn`t exploit his reach advantage at all and had to fight on the inside just like against Starling in `89.
I'd have to rewatch it's been so long. As I thought Toney was losing the fight and salvaged it with a come from behind stoppage.
Nunn was landing a lot of shots whilst being countered pretty easily, but what I was focusing on was specifically the jab, it was almost completely impotent in this bout which led to Nunn mainly fighting on the inside.
“Nunn was been countered pretty easily, Jab completely impotent, Nunn forced to fight on the inside”. Lol.You make it sound like Nunn was totally losing the fight!
If you rewatch, please share your thoughts in our Fight of the Week thread: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-toney-doubleheader-nunn-and-mccallum.620465/
Nunn was never a draw. That caused problems when he was trying to get paid. He started altering his style to become more marketable. Now throw in the fact that he started partying too much and he couldnt get any big name to step into the ring with him. Nunn was having his way with Toney even stinging Toney on a couple of occasions. To Toneys credit he didnt lay down and give up and he won fair and square. But alot of it was Nunn begun to tire and get sloppy. The top Nunn was vs Frank Tate. Compare the Nunn that fought Toney and they are leagues apart. I have the Nunn vs the German fight and Nunn won. He wasnt going to get a decision in Germany.
I also said Nunn was scoring well on the inside himself, it was not a good performance in any case, he was getting caught with loads of shots.
Nunn had long since stopped using those legs of his. He used to circle a ton and flick jabs and occasionally follow up with something. He was planting his feet and getting hit by guys like Barkley and Roldan. Prior to that he was one of the best in the sport with mobility. But it was not fan friendly and he stayed in the pocket far more often than he did in previous bouts added up. and that is what Toney capitalized on---him staying there and James not having to hit a moving target.
