Why was Peter Quillin going to get paid so much money?

I don't know about anyone else, but he's not a fighter I get excited about watching.

And it's not that there aren't any exciting fighters out there to watch, it's just Quillin isn't one of them.

I imagine that outside of hardcore boxing fans, nobody has ever heard of him and those that have, don't particularly care to watch him, especially given the level of his opposition.

So, why is Showtime paying this guy so much money?

It's not like he's a devestating puncher like GGG.

He doesn't have the fan base Chavez or Canelo do, who are both better boxers and better punchers than Quillin.

He doesn't have the appeal of an aging Bernard Hopkins who is the oldest man to win a title.

Honestly, I think Jacobs is a more exciting fighter than Quillin and he has a better storyline.

So why, would Showtime choose to pay Quillin so much money? It seems to me that it is a losing proposition.

    I don't get it.

Maybe somebody can explain how Quillin has unexplicably become a major force in boxing.

I mean, before Quillin shamelessly ducked Korobov, a beatable opponent, he was scheduled to be paid $1.4 Million.

This is as much as Maidana was scheduled to be paid before Floyd pulled perhaps the most cowardly move in boxing history and paid him THAT MONEY to actually DOUBLE his earnings for that fight. It was actually a record pay out to increase his opponents earnings.

So, how is Quillin worth this much?

Because Jay-Z's promotional company put up a purse bid of 1.9m or so. Have to ask them why they did it.

WBO rules stipulated 75/25 split for champ/challenger.

    Oh, that make sense.

Jay-Z was probably trying to send a message. Either that or he likes losing money.

Smart money is on the message aspect. Especially since Haymon backed out of letting his fighter get massively overpaid against all apparent logic.

Jay-Z apparently loathes Haymon, and some folks think he is getting into boxing mostly to screw with him. Who knows though, I dont care about rap culture in the slightest and just repeating what some of the boxing media are saying regarding that.

Looks like he wanted to make Haymon look bad. And he probably got more as he hoped for out of it.

Jay-Z DKSAB. He probably never heard of GGG or even Europe. :rofl Why would he waste his time and money for a bum like Quillin instead of trying to get attention from his wife?

Funny thing is Jay has the dough to follow haymon around like this for a while. What's haymon going to do? Keep canceling fights that Jay wins purse bids on? I think haymon can ill afford to do this much more and Jay z will win out in the end.

I think Jay-Z just wanted to put on a big fight in Brooklyn with a Brooklyn based guy, as a way to start out his promotional career.

I think people are reading too much into Roc-nations agenda here

Jay-Z was pulling off a high level troll job on Haymon, and it worked out better than he could have ever planned.

Jay really, really doesn't like him.

The hilarious thing is that Roc Nation can keep this up way longer than Al can. Every time Haymon pulls out, they don't even have to pay up on the purse bid. Haymon really ought to just call their bluff and start making these matches because all continually pulling his fighters out will do is expose him as a con man, or as someone who lets his personal feelings get in the way of looking out for his fighters.

The real loser of this mess is Quillin. He really needs his head read.A new child, getting the largest payday by far in his career and nothing now to show for it.Haymon is acting like the old Don King-whats best for him,not whats best for the fighter.
    Pathetic.

I dont think Jay-Z went and set up a boxing promotional company, got the licences to "troll" Al Haymon

    Do we?

Maybe, but with the effect it has had, even if this wasn't intended at all it well might trigger RN to keep this up and hit two birds with one stone every single time.
Their sarcastic reaction after Quillin pulling out about him getting an even bigger payday clearly points to that option.

I don't go to a steakhouse specifically for the dessert, either, but it sure is a sweet way to cap off the meal.

If Roc can be a successful promotion AND be a thorn in Haymon's side, so much the merrier.
