Why Was Quartey So Consistently Screwed?

I can't imagine it's Whitaker syndrome. Not appealing to judges because of his style.

He very, VERY clearly beat Lopez and Forrest.

Many feel he also beat Hoya.

    So why?

Probably because people didn't feel he was marketable or something...

Sad, he could have been rated a lot higher than he is if he didn't get screwed so much..

Yeah, stealing Hoya's 0 would of shot him up there.

I thought Quartey's boxing against Lopez was brilliant even though he got dropped twice down the stretch. His jab was thudding home all night.

Yeah, that jab was unbelievable to say the least.

He was DEFINITELY screwed against Lopez and Forrest. Ike won 9 rounds against Lopez, even with the KD's, Lopez still didnt deserve a draw.

And how they gave Forrest the fight is behind me. Ike kicked Forrest's ass, he shoulda won that fight. In fact, Ike beat Forrest more clearly than Mora did.

I thought he beat DLH too, but at least that fight was close.

Ike's only clear losses were against Vargas, and Wright.

Wow. I had him losing. And he was lucky as hell not to get KO'd.

Quartey was a bit of a one-trick pony, that incredible sledgehammer jab. Other than that, he was extremely unimaginative and fairly limited.

Man, I can't believe what a bunch of whiners people are over this sport. Close fights he lost or drew- on his merits.

Lots of differnt opinions. I have Quartey winning against Lopez, but losing against ODLH and Forrest (closely both fights)

Thats a misconception that all Ike had was a jab. Ike had a good right hand, threw good combinations, and had pretty fast hands as well. He was an underrated body puncher also.

Had his fights with Lopez and DLH draws. Thought he edged Forrest. Clearly beat Carr. Clearly lost to Vargas and Wright.

He was a very good fighter with a tremendous left hand however in my opinion he did not help himself in some key fights. Against ODLH, ODLH was asking to be knocked out and was petrified of Quartey's power but basically Ike let him off the hook. The fight should not have gone past 8 to 10 rounds. The fact it did says something about Ike Quartey's make up. Azumah Nelson knew when to pull the trigger I am not sure Quartey did. Talented but not the best ring general by any stretch of imagination.

Ike was the road warrior taking on the house fighter. Just how many times does the house fighter get the short end of the stick, anyway?

Another thing that would've helped his career would have been some fine tuning and polishing by a top notch trainer. That right hand needed some work in there as well as his upper body mobility & defense.

I absolutely agree 100%. Ike with his raw materials had had he been polished should have become a truely great fighter like countryman Azumah Nelson.

When you are not the house fighter you are supposed to take the decision out of the hands of the judges. See what Azumah Nelson did to the Wilfredo Gomez in San Juan Puerto Rico and Jeff Fenech in Australia.
