Quartey's fight with Lopez really exposed his limitations despite him smashing his face in with the jab all night. a more active fighter than the glacially slow, lethargic Lopez with at least equivalent power that could back quartey up would very likely KO him badly. I tend to see Espana beating him more often than not as well.Crisanto blew that fight pathetically.
If I remember well, I think Quartey's fight with Lopez was his first comeback fight after retirement, so I wouldn't base too much emphasis from Ike in that fight, but I think he should have won the Lopez and Forrest fight.
Quartey should have gotten the decisions against Lopez, De La Hoya, and Forrest. Quartey didn't do himself much favors though by being inactive so often. He hadn't fought in almost a year and a half when he fought DLH, over a year against Vargas, and then took 5 years off after that.
I don't know if this is true or not, but some posters here have mentioned that Arum basically told Quartey to vacate his title and remain inactive before the De La Hoya fight or else a fight with the Golden Boy would never materialize.
There was this big mess with a lawsuit, when Quartey was supposed to originally fight Trinidad in 1998 http://www.nycourts.gov/comdiv/Law%20Report%20Files/January%201999/quartey.htm
I don;t think he was screwed. I think he simply was over rated and came up short in his biggest bouts .....
IN your opinion. In mine he fought another undistinguished fight that was close and could have gone either way ... a fight going either way does not mean he was screwed ... in addition, there was something about Ike that made you feel he simply was not going balls to the wall often ... maybe not true but it felt that way ... in addition, the way he complained about each loss as if it never had anything to do with him was annoying ....
I thought he lost to Oscar but beat Forest, the Lopez fight was tough as I recall, Only the Forest fight he should have won but Vernon was the media star
NO way was he robbed against DLH. i had oscar by 2 points. IKE could of won that. ODLH was terrible that night. he was doing too much bangin around at the time he was robbed against lopez and forrest
he had a great defence and a left hook that he timed you on. a huge puncher aswell. i agree he could look bad at times but this is more due to the fact that he had no real style neither a boxer or a puncher or a counterpuncher he just had a mix of everything that gelled well.
I thought Ike was an excellant fighter. I wonder how his career would have wound up if he didnt get shafter so much.
