Roy, along with his team and HBO, did all try to land him big fights during his career.

He never got the respect he deserved.

He was definitely too good for his own good.

Roy Jones jr was his own worst enemy.. Sure he got robbed blind in Seoul along with many others. But he used that robbery excuse not to travel & fight the legitimate opponents . Instead he took on a bevvy of part time fighters Police Officers Mailmen & even a garbage collector.
In my opinion he was just like Mayweather both had the talent to become legendary ATG's but lacked the courage & cojones a REAL ATG also needs

Roy had a sweetheart deal with HBO that they would air all his fights on regular HBO and pay him a couple of million whoever he fought.

Exactly! For a long time, HBO was dissatisfied with Jones choice of opposition.
Roy Jones physical talent was so immense, that Jones basically called his own shots there, HBO basically timid that they could lose Jones, aired all his fights with overmatched opponents

Roy Jones just overpriced himself in negotiations against bonafide fighters.

A Hopkins rematch loomed for a long time but neither fighter budged from what they demanded financially. Jones wanted a 60/40 split, Hopkins wanting 50/50.

When Jones beat John Ruiz at Heavyweight, negotiations went on to have Jones matched with Evander Holyfield who was well on the downside but still very marketeable.

Holyfield wanted the fight, but Jones offer of a 5 million flat purse in a fight estimated to draw well over 1million ppv's was just a slap in the face to to a proven PPV star like Holyfield.

Jones also talked up matchups with the Klitchko's and Lennox Lewis, but he wasn't really being serious, it was just to put his name in the papers to get free advertisements for his coming fights.

Don't remember what Jones was asking for to fight Lennox Lewis, but it was a guarantee well beyond any fight purse in history at the time, so those negotiations never even got off the ground.

Then came the Tarver fights, and Roy Jones career went into a deepward spiral.
Coming off his shocking KO loss to Tarver, Glenn Johnson was supposed to be tailor made to get Roy Jones back on track, but Jones looking completely shot and unable to pull the trigger against Glenn Johnson was knocked out unconscious worst than the Tarver fight.

Soon after that Glenn Johnson fight, Jones all of a sudden found himself completely shot and willing to fight anyone. :patsch

That right there is the reason why Jones never became a PPV star.
    Well, there was two reason.
    1. He never had a promoter to grease the right palms and hype him up properly to the right people. Promoting himself when he didn't have a lot of knowledge about it was a mistake.
    and
    2. It was only until he lost his aura of invincibility was Jones willing to risk anything in negotiations and in a ring.
