I had a look at Jones vs Griffin 1+2 and he was sloppy in both fights, he had too much power in the rematch but was also missing wildly at first in that one also, if he fought that way vs ATG`s in the light heavy division during their respective eras wouldn`t he have been destroyed? Wouldn`t fighters like Michael Spinks have dealt with Griffin a lot easier?
Just a clash of styles I believe, and Jones taking him lightly. Also Griffin was a awkward sod to fight.
Montell had Eddie Futch in his corner for the first fight. That can not be overstated. Futch was a genius and his game plan clearly frustrated Roy to the point when he finally got success in round 9 he got carried away and cheap shotted Montell disqualifying himself. If Griffin has power he would of stopped Jones that night. However he was a limited fighter with a great game plan. Rematch no Futch
Montell was a.good boxer skillful and hard to figure out ! He beat Tonny so he was no mug .pity he seemed to disappear not long after the Jones fight.
Griffin also beat toney. He was no bum. Not even close. Very awkward and crafty. Blasting him out in round 1 with just a few landed power punches is very very impressive. Jones rarely attacked with that much conviction
Griffin was a tricky guy who just made fighters look bad. I thought Griffin out-hustled Toney and deserved the verdict in the first match and he gave prime Jones absolute fits. Jones was likely going to either stop him or take over down the stretch but the fact he felt the need to hit him whilst he was down speak volumes about how much Jones was under the pump. That said Jones didn't look bad in the re-match at all. He badly hurt Griffin with a peach of a left in the first 20 seconds and got a bit sloppy when he was going in for the kill (which he achieved with that savage left hook/uppercut) but otherwise he was devastating that fight.
