Why was Roy's fall from grace so sudden?

You went from sounding like a disappointed fan to a hater lol...Whattheheckisdatabout? We are talking about Jones who rarely lost rounds right. I could go along and say it is mental, but it isn't 100% mental. Sorry.

Cal outclassed Jones. Jones tried, and he found out just how good Cal is. Jones was also 39 years old. He felt good about himself before the fight, but Jones was going up against a guy who relies on speed also.

Let me clarify: Round 5 was the ONLY round he did that in (from my recollection). For whatever reason, he made an effort in that round. He did not do so in the previous four or the subsequent seven.

He just clowned around a lot, and did not do much.

Do you SERIOUSLY believe he gave his best effort?

Fair enough. I disagree with you, but fair take.

I never said it was 100% and conceded in earlier posts that his legs are clearly shot. What I am saying, is his confidence level dipped TREMENDOUSLY after the Tarver rematch. Ergo, his main fall from grace was of the mental variety.

Cutting the weight is a BS excuse IMO. I don't doubt that it affected him in his first fight back against Tarver, but not for the whole rest of his career (especially since he made 168 to fight Tito a few years later). Plenty of other fighters (ie: Bob Foster, Archie Moore) have bulked up to 190-200 pounds for one fight and then cut back down, and it didn't "ruin" them for the whole rest of their career.

I think the simple fact of the matter is that Roy was just overrated to begin with, at least as a light-heavyweight anyway. His comp. at LHW was largely indistinguished, and with the possible exception of Virgil Hill (who was past his prime), I think Tarver and even Glen Johnson were better than practically everyone else he fought at that weight (certainly, they have the best record of any of Roy's LHW opponents against Roy's other opponents).

Roy was starting to slow down at the time he fought Tarver, but not enough to affect his rating as the top P4P fighter in the world. Tarver and Glen Johnson simply exposed and capitalized on weaknesses/limitations that were always there in Roy.

I personally think he was slowing down before the Ruiz fight, it's just that he still was faster than anyone out there, but not as fast as he normally was.

No, but others have dropped 20 and kept the belt they already had (and without the benefit of day-before-fight weigh-ins).

    That's hardly supernatural.

There is a grain of truth to what you are saying, but he did fight the man 3 times. It just seemed to me, and maybe I'm wrong that his body has given up on him. He knows what to do, but the body won't do it like it used to. Losing to Tarver and Johnson by ko will take away from any fighters mentally and make them possibly gunshy. But Roy just shut down after doing very well in the third fight with Tarver. Jones body can not get prepared for a long, bus fight anymore.

Yeah, but Roy trained for months to gain muscle and weight to fight Ruiz, and then had to drop that muscle and weight to fight a top LHW. What he did was supernatural by winning those fights, but look where it left him physically.

I think the reserve tank was used up in the 3rd Tarver fight ..That was the last time I saw Jones look like he could of had something left ..In his next 3 fights he just used his hands ther were signsof hime there but nothing close to what he once was .

Probably true, but it's quite obvious he also lacked the stamina to keep anything substantial going. You're telling me he just decided to whoop Tarver's ass and embarass him for a round just for the hell of it? If he could've kept it up he would.

You attempted to put together a coherent sentence using words you'd just looked up to feign intelligence. I am impressed that you had the mental capacity to even go that far in desperate search of credibility. You failed however, similarly to how you fail at life.
