why was there a week gap between joe louis winning...

    ...the world title and being officially recognised ?

    i'm going by what is posted on boxerc...

    Louis down in 1st; Braddock in 8th.
    NYSAC recognized Louis as Champion on June 30; NBA on July 1

    They were reluctant to recognise the Braddock - Louis bout as being for the title because Braddock was supposed to defend against Schmeling instead. As well as holding the win against Louis, Schmeling had actually signed contracts to fight for the title in New York on June 3rd. Braddock got suspended by the NYSAC for pulling out and going for the big payday against Louis.

    but louis was declared champ by fans and media on the night though?...without official recognition?

    Yes, and I guess that's why the governing bodies had to give way - by pretending Louis wasn't champion they were just going to look stupid.
