Why was Willie Meehan a thorn in Dempsey's side?

Maybe he was like an ancient version of Buster Mathis Jr. Jr. was good enough to trouble anyone for three or four rounds.

Then Meehan was quoted in the paper as saying "Now let me get a crack at the Kaiser" (The U.S was involved in World War I at the time). Remember, Dempsey was considered by many to be a "Draft Dodger" post WWI.

Right. Yet, he's doing exhibitions before he won the title to raise money for the Army and Navy.

According to his tombstone shown in a photograph on his page on the Find A Grave website, Eugene Christopher Patrick Walcott (whose ring name was Willie Meehan) served in the United States Naval Reserve Forces during World War I. He is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.

It could be that Willie Meehan had an ugly fighting style, but it must've been effective enough for him to be a competent journeyman at the very least. Notice that he wasn't losing one bout after another until he had been active in the ring for about a decade.
