He had a similar style and similar size. Why wasn't he as good?

Because there was not a Joe Louis in their era to topple the brothers.

Did he have similar movement and athleticism? Most big guys over 6'5" are awkward and lumbering, it's the outliers who can stay mobile and somewhat nimble at a huge size.

Lewis, The Klitschko's, AJ, Fury fall into that category (yes they are lumbering compared to the lower weight classes but move better than 95% of men 6'5"+)

Or maybe there wasn't a Vitali in Joe's era to topple him!

I believe the Klitschko brothers were better than Primo Carnera. I just question by how much? When Primo Carnera reached his peak, I think he is often underestimated. He really was not as bad as some make him out to be, in my opinion.

Carnera had more aptitude for wrestling.

Carnera wasn't bad. But the Klitschkos had an overall much better understanding of the fight game. They were not as stiff and their footwork was much better. Carnera was not that difficult to close in on whereas a guy like Wlad had the ATG footwork to keep a dude on the end of his jab all night long. Vitali had a very unique way of fighting coupled with hair trigger reflexes and an elite sense of distance. Wlad was more like Carnera but let's be honest he was technically on the next level with his punches. More accurate and better timing. Carnera does the right things but in a "I learned this last week" kind of way.

The Klitschko had overall better fundamentals, timing, and accuracy due to a good amateur schooling and trainers better equipped to handle big men. Not much separating them in terms of raw size, strength, and ability, although Wladmir had better natural talent and speed than his brother and Primo. The brothers learned how to use the ring and keep guys at the end of their jabs, although Careers did this sometimes he could be a but clumsy or let the smaller men crowd him. However, Carnera was a better inside fighter than either man and knew how to impose his tremendous strength rather than simply grab and lean on opponents.

I think if Carnera was brought along today he might make it pretty far so long as he doesn't run into any skilled boxer punchers or cagey defensive guys.

Firstly I will say that Carnera's handlers wrung every drop of talent they could out of him.

They brought Abe Attell in to train him, and he did a very good job.

I don't think that he goes much further with Manny Steward training him.

    So what limited him?

His power was good for a heavyweight of the era, but nothing special for a super heavyweight.

His chin was decent, but a powerful puncher would crack it.

He was just big, and technically good, and that left a path to victory for the smaller man.

God seriously? No disrespect to others opinions but Primo always looked ****ing awful. I am astounded anyone would consider this a reasonable comparison, whatever their flaws both the K brothers knew how to box. Carnera always looked off balance, threw horrible pawing punches and many of his fights stunk to high heaven. Both Klitschko brothers fought much better opponents overall and showed significant class, the few times Primo stepped up in class either he hugely outweighed his opposition or was butchered. Christ can anyone imagine swapping Primo out for Vitali in the Lewis fight, poor Primo would been killed.
