Why wasn't Hagler more aggressive vs. Duran and Leonard?

With Duran, it was a case of Marvin respecting Roberto too much.Anyone else, would take Duran on, and put him out. With Leonard, he got caught up the Ray Leonard mind game, and got screwed.

I think Hagler felt he was good enough to outbox both Duran & Leonard, he probably knew from seeing Hearns vs SRL & Benitez that it was a waste of time trying to outbox Tommy, he knew knockout was the only way to beat Hearns.

I think Durans power and Leonards footwork had to do with that.

Agree with this. I just don't think the Petronellis were as fashionable as some of the aforementioned trainers.

Agree again, especially re the Duran fight. I thought Duran won 3-4 rounds tops (a long time since I've watched it but that was my recollection at the time). I thought Duran largely fought to survive and to try to make Hagler look bad, therefore claiming some kind of "moral" victory.

Agree with para 2 also. I believe that both Duran & Leonard benefitted from the public perception that Hagler was too much of a beast for them, so when they both went the distance, they automatically got kudos for lasting to the end. I think this influence extended to the judges' percptions of the contests too.

    well said

I dont know why people discount the fact Hagler was shot in his last fight. I showed J. Thomas my photo in which Hagler was totally outsped by two of the Weaver tripplets. He couldnt lay a glove on them and spent most of the time covering up from flurries.

I can't say what happened in the Duran fight. he might have been carrying him

Because both were good enough to beat him to the punch and counter punch him and both hit hard enough to discourage him. It's that simple

Hagler wanted to show Loenard up by out boxing him and even fighting as a righty for the first few rounds, well we all know it did not go to plan.

For all his talent Hagler lacked a bit of confidence in his stamina ... he wanted to both pace himself and outclass Duran ... people forget how Marvin came very close to punching himself out in his first title bout against Obel and he wanted to play it safe ... the only time he went balls to the wall in a superfight was against Hearns .. that being said Duran is given more credit for that fight than he deserves ... it was not close at all and he never had Marvin in any sort of trouble ... it was more a matter that he survived and Marvin never seriously hurt him ...

Against Leonard Marvin was old, over trained and up against a style that would always have been challenging ... people forget that even thought Ray was coming back he was still the younger man ... Hagler was older and had a ton more miles on him ... no taking away Ray's amazing and gutsy performance ...

100% agree with this. Hagler, for all his bravado, curiously lacked confidence, you could clearly see that against Duran and Leonard. That said, still one of the ATGs.

I agree with that. He definitely won the Duran fight alright but Duran's know how had him confused. It's ok saying that Hagler should of went in for a tearup but he was getting countered, specially by Duran's right hands through the middle and his face showed it at the end. Who knows what would of happened if he went all out, remembering that that was Duran's game as well. He might of even been stopped on cuts. At the end of the day he was in with a technically better fighter than himself and he won with superior strength and natural size being the biggest factors.
