For the record I think I gave Broner 2 rounds: 12th and 7th. 4-6 were closer but I still thought Maidana was doing enough to win those rounds.
They wanted to rob Maidana if even slightly close but they just couldn't. Haymon, GBP, and others had big plans for Broner, but Maidana ruined the plans. Stylistically, they thought Broner would win easily but it was a cherrypick gone wrong. There would've been a riot for sure and a lot of fans lost if the robbery had happened. That's probably why they took so long to announce the decision.
Cole seemed pretty impartial to me. If anything, he should not have taken a point from Maidana for the headbutt infraction because it wasn't flagrant. It should have warranted a warning because of the way Broner was holding. Regarding elbows to the face, if you recall, Maidana was the one who made it clear at the very beginning of the fight when Broner shoved an elbow in his face, that he wasn't going to roll over and he responded in kind. Then Broner continued to do it blatantly throughout the rest of the fight. It warranted a point being taken, imo.
OK Lets put this in perspective........ 1..... Broner got his ass kicked by the better fighter on the night. Kudos to Marcos Maidana who thoroughly deserves to be called CHAMPION 2 .... Laurence Cole gave Broner every chance. He let him get away with murder throughout the fight holding & Floydlike forearm smashes. Giving Maidana a point deduction for that supposed headbutt was inevitable but he should have also deducted a point from Broner for the blatant holding which caused the whole scenario. Laurence tried hard to keep in with GBP but he also put Broner straight when he tried the playacting falling to canvas . Cole rightly just told him to get up he wasn't buying it 3.... The reason Maidana wasn't robbed was because the fight was held in Texas not Vegas. Can you imagine the outcome in Vegas if Cortez was referee & the Vegas mafia judging????? I had to laugh watching Shaeffer, Hopkins & Haymon's faces drop down further & further as Maidana beat up their supposed superstar. The bottom line is Maidana wasn't supposed to win Broner was, so lets hope Maidana is not treated like Antonio Margarito was for Beating up Miguel Cotto . This will prove what Broner is made of.. Will he head back to gym & come back with a vengeance or will he do a Hamed & self destruct????? The way he left the ring like a spoiled child does not bode to well does it
Two of the judges were non-US: South Africa, Puerto Rico and New Mexico. So maybe that made a difference. The New Mexico judge had it the closest at 115-110. If this fight had been in Vegas it would probably have been a Broner win or a draw. (I know PR is a US commonwealth, but it is Spanish speaking and has its own boxing tradition)
