Firstly, he beat Haye but the powers that be realize Haye was far more marketable. Secondly, he would rule MDQ heavyweight boxing from inception up to Joe Louis.
He was merciful that night against Haye if the near death experience had landed it would've been goodnight Irene.
An interesting take, but I have to admit that my mother never confided her thoughts on this issue to me.
Prime example why size and weight don't equal punching power, along with Fury, Canera, Mathis sr. Grant, etc. And the bottom line was he just wasn't a very good fighter..
He didn't lack power my previous sarcasm aside he was just slow and pawing with no real aggression, if you watch and see most of his knockouts it's as if he wakes up from some walking slumber he just wakes up and let's them have it he nigh knocks someone out with a jab I don't remember the fight but I'm always blown away when the giant awakens and he takes on his inner ogre.
Lack of skill, lack of power, all round lack of talent. If he had been 50lbs lighter he would never have been manouvered into a title.
