Why wasn't Valuev a dominant champion?

Simple. He never fought the best men and couldn’t beat or look decisively victorious against the ones he did..

    This man pre
This man presents an interesting dilemna.
Sure he was neither very skilled nor very powerful.
But he was 50-2. Held a world HW title twice & defended it a bunch of times.
He also beat some very good fighters after all the novices & tomato cans (that most everyone goes through).

So even if his sicces was overwhelmingly due to his size...
If we want to rank how good he was in winning-as opposed to his skills overall-he was at least a World Class, top fighter.
Though it is a case where it is due almost entirely to his size...
Still whatever reason he legally can win defines how good he is overall.

He makes Wilder look like an ATG and lost to Donald, old Holyfield and Ruiz×2.

This War01 guy must be a major troll, lol.

    As others have said,

Valuev was slow, had trouble putting his punches together, did not have a good defense.

He did beat a shot Holyfield, but would have a lot of trouble with the likes of Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, etc. when they were prime.

to be fair, he did get the decision in all those fight.

But, yeah, he wasn't very good.

Ruiz was overrated, Holyfield was shot, and Donald was way past prime.

I always felt he edged Holy and Haye, am I crazy? I'm going to watch V Ruiz 1 now. He looked terrible, slow etc but he still was hard to outscore.

    No no.
John L Sullivan's got something for him. Remember the bigger they come the harder they fall? Sullivan coined that phrase.
I also have Luther McCarty eeking out a technical draw.

Valuev's heart wasn't in boxing. It was just a paycheck. The guys happier as a children's TV host.

If he'd actually had a mean streak, he could've done some serious damage.
