Why wasn't Winky Wright able to capitalize on Williams horrible defense

He didn't look that rusty...but if that is part of the reason he has himself to blame

Good fair post. However, I doubt if Pavlik will let Paul "fight on the inside." I really suspect KP will just act like the bigger, stronger man; clinch, maul, and bully.

Paul Williams wasn't telegraphing his punches, as a result most of his punches were hitting Winky. It's hard to counter when you keep getting hit and the other guy throws that many punches.

He was at a height and reach disadvantage and he doesn't move his feet. And hes old.

I think his high work rate serves him in the defense category, to be honest with you, when he gets going, you either punch with him or have to wait until he is done to get your shots off...

And at Winkys advanced age he really didnt stand much of a chance to catch Paul in between, I never in my life thought I would see the day in which Margarito performs better against Williams than Winky Wright did....

Because he couldn't get in range. When you throw punches at Winky, he covers up. When you keep throwing punches at Winky every second of every minute of every round, he doesn't get the opportunity to counter.

To beat a big volume puncher like Pdub, you need someone who is willing to take a shot to give a shot and who can impose his strength on him. That man is Kelly Pavlik.

Excellent point! For a while I started to buy into the story that PW is way better than he was when he fought Margo. Yesterday I watched the Margo and Phillips fights back to back. Paul hasn't changed.

:-(I never looked at it that way but you're right...but then again Margo doesn't let little things like defence get in the way of mounting his own 1000 punch attack

Defense was very leaky as Winky showed but Winky couldn't hurt him. After a while Winky was simply discouraged by this. That is what makes this fight interesting. What happens when Pavlik hits him? I don't see a one and out, but Kelly has the habit of changing fights in the first round with one punch. I look for Pdub's output to go down dramatically after the first good shot.

Kelly Pavlik is vulnerable to counter punchers (Bernard Hopkins), he telegraphs his punches. Paul Williams if he adopts a counter punch strategy, or if he just uses angles and lets his hands go will have an easy time beating Kelly Pavlik, he may even get a TKO.

He sits on his punches now, and he doesn't telegraph his punches anymore. Watch carefully.

I think the Pavlik fans are failing to bring up Pavlik's own defensive liablilities.

That's about as likely as Pavlik counter-punching Williams to a victory, and the claim that Williams could stop him with that strategy (when an 185 pound Bernard Hopkins couldn't) is laughable.

I say again: this idea that Williams is some kind of technical boxer is pure trash. He is a volume puncher who uses his physical advantages to swarm his opponents.

Pavlik's defence isn't great, but the fundamentals are there, whereas PW tends to let his guard down regularly.

Anyway, defence isn't really relevant in this fight: it will be a short but sweet war, and Williams will end up on the floor.
