Why were Larry Merchant and Emmanuel Steward trashing Andre Berto last night?

Im not even a fan of Berto. But last night was the best I've seen him. He was actually placing his punches, using his jab, not being wild and relying totally on his speed. And Quintana's a class fighter.

Why were Merchant and Steward so adamant about putting him down. Even in the 7th when it was clear Quintana was breaking it was like Merchant and Steward were insisting on keeping Quintana in the fight more then he was and how bad Berto was.

You could actually hear Lampley getting flustered and angry at the comments Merchant and Steward were making.

    So why? Why the hate?

i think because berto seemed to be a potential fight for paquiao, mosley or may,and they even said they shouldn't need to worry, because he cant hit and has a suspected chin(remember quintana left cross)..berto its a jeff lacy waiting to happen..mark my words!!....also collazo got robbed against him imo!

Larry was drunk and Steward was just telling us how it was exactly going to go.

I don't know if I really noticed a great deal of bashing, outside of Steward's comment about Berto " not always looking pretty, " and Larry agreeing with him.. I think that both men concur that he's just not always impressive to watch, but I really didn't take this as all out bashing... As for Berto, I have enjoyed watching him these past few years.. He hasn't exactly taken on the elite of the division, nor won all of his fights in decisive fashion, but he does have some very good physical tools, speed and reasonable skill. We also have to address the fact that he's fighting in a very competitive welter weight division, and defending a title.. He's 26 years old and has 26 bouts.. While he is definitely beyond the stage where we can call him a prospect, I'm still not sure that I'm ready to say weather or not he's reached his peak... I'd like to give him another 18 months and a few more fights, before I make my decision.

You must've been watching a different fight than I was because I saw the exact opposite of that last night. You must be thinking of Celestino Caballero, right?

Anyway, I don't think they were bashing Berto, but at the same time they didn't seem too impressed with what they saw... and neither were most fans.

Not even Berto's mother would have been impressed with her boy's performance last night, but he pulled out the victory regardless.

I don't think and never have thought that Andre had the talent to be the very best at Welterweight, but he ain't suffering black eyes and cut lips for the fun of it. He's trying.

    Well.
Lampley is a certified no nothing Dink.
Berto did not look great in regard to his skill.
Yes he did win because of his strenght and persistence.
And he definately would be easy pickens for either Mayweather or Mosley.
It is nice once in a while for the commentators to tell the truth.
Even when there are some who dont want to hear it.

im not a huge Berto fan but in all honestly i thought that he did well against CQ i mean look at the way that PW looked against CQ the first fight..... he has the tendency to make some people look bad . and in the end Berto got a nice ko over a quailty fighter

Because they're idiots and have been getting increasingly unprofessional. They're getting pretty annoying these days.

They were expressing their opinions, like it or not. Do you want them to be like the nuthugging UK announcers? I saw the Haye fight the last week and they had his sweaty balls in their mounths the entire fight. It was disgraceful.
