Why were we being told Cleverly had a granite chin?

Disappointing to see him lose without giving it his all. I think he could of done much better.
He underrated his power and that was stupid.
He should of gotten in his chest and threw in bunches. He barely let his hands go.

Maybe the brits do, I can't speak for them, I just liked the look of Cleverly and wasn't conviced of Kovalev..but...Deontay Wilder..THAT is an untested hype

It might not be granite but he obviously has a good chin though. And correct me if I'm wrong, but with the exception of the tragic fight where one of his opponents died (RIP), who obviously must have been a very tough guy indeed, hasn't Kovalev made it somewhat of a habit of late of blasting his opposition out of there in quick, effortless destructive fashion? This is the furthest he's gone since the Simakov tragedy despite the fact he's stepped up in class. Kovalev is a beast and Cleverly took an awful big risk in fighting him, which unfortunately for him backfired but he still deserves maximum credit for taking such a huge risk.

I too couldn't understand why anyone would claim Cleverly had a granite chin when he had been rocked by a feather-fisted fighter from Poland and hadn't never been in with a genuine puncher. Some said the label stemmed from his fights with Murat and Bellew. Though I don't believe either guy possesses world class power to begin with. One guy even went as far as saying Bellew actually punched harder than Kovalev.

I actually asked this very same question two days ago in a thread ("Boxing So-Called Experts Give Their Prediction For Kovalev vs Cleverly") that for some reason has since been deleted.

It's because Cleverly withstood Tony "Bomber" Bellew's shots, who himself was greatly hyped as a huge puncher, and so Clev was thought to have a granite chin. It's a sort of hype circle...quite common around this way.

    Good post.

I have no doubt that Cleverly would easily beat the likes of Cloud or Bhop or Stevenson. And his chin would more than support him in those fights.

He simply fought a guy who doesnt miss with his monster shots and who doesnt telegraph his punches. Every punch from KOvalev looks like a regular shot, but it becoming impossible to tell which can be absorbed and which are gonna drop a guy like an axed pole.

Cleverly took a hella lot more than a guy like Bhop or Stevenson would have been able to take.:deal

Kovalev just ruined cleverly's career, and now he will fight scared every fight. And the fact he's feather-fisted is even worse.

How was cleverly hyped ? nobody apart from deluded welsh fans ever thought anything more than a paper champ of him.It was obvious soon as he stepped in with someone solid world level he would get found out.

The likes of Froch Ward Kessler Hopkins Dawson Pascal Bute would destroy him just as easy.

Cleverly took Kovalevs shot better than white did. It should have been stoped in the 3rd round not 4. Kovalev is the real deal. He will be on the P4P list by 2015 or sooner.

    Thanks.

I've just watched the fight again but in high quality this time and Cleverly took a constant stream of very hard leather from the beginning right up until the end. They might not all have landed cleanly but Kovalev is so heavy handed he doesn't need to land clean to do damage. There's nothing wrong with Cleverly's chin it's Kovalev's two-fisted power, accuracy, speed, and variety that's the problem. And that's something which is going to be a problem for everyone in the division to deal with.
