Why weren't old time Boxers punch drunk?

A lot of the old time fighters also died at a relatively young age for a variety of reasons, before longterm effects of TBI would be apparent.

There is evidence that Louis was suffering minor brain damage, as early as the Walcott fight.

 

I know Nelson was a mess when he died, when did his mental state decline?

 

It is one of the sadder stories in boxing.

He was institutionalized after he retired, and he would go out for a run, and tell people that he was training for Joe Gans.

Gans himself was dead by then.

Anybody who does not feel nostalgia for that era of boxing, doesn't have a soul, and anybody who wants it back, doesn't have a brain!

 

When was he institutionalised?

 

Likewise Joe Grim, who ended his days in a mental asylum.

 

I would have to look it up, but the date is not going to make it a happy ending, either way!
