I know he's saying he wants a rematch now. I think that's an emotional response. It really doesn't make sense for him to come back for a few reasons.

    1. Why bother? I think he stuck around for so long for 2 reasons: a unify the belts for the first time ever (for this many belts) and b. break Joe Louis record for time as champ and for consecutive defenses. Between those two accomplishments, Wlad would have staked a legitimately debatable claim to GOAT. Now, Joe Louis's record is out of reach. Even if he could unify (and I'll go into that in a minute) I don't see any way he could stake an even debatable claim at this point for GOAT. His overall standing as an ATG is secure, the vast majority will have him in the top 10-12, only his haters will deny him that. So why bother coming back? There's really not too much to gain.

    2. Decline. Some of the same problems in his fight with Jennings were visible with Fury; failure to pull the trigger. It's possible but unlikely that this is simply a matter of unique match up problems both provided. Its much more likely its a symptom of overall decline of reflexes etc. And he's only getting older. And he'll have to rematch Fury to get back his old belts. Fury clearly matches up well with him, and his only chance would be to throw caution to the wind to try to ko him. I think its either too against his nature or his just physically incapable of it at this stage of his career. Fury will have more confidence, so a late stoppage would be possible against Wlad. That would be a bad way to go out. And even if he were able to beat Fury, which is unlikely, his chances of losing a unification bout are very high.

He's got a lot to lose by fighting again and not too much to gain. He's had a great career, is a clear top 10 ATG, he should go out with his head held high, and not try to cling to something that has passed him by.
