1 He's had the incredibly rare loss that actually increases his legacy. Why risk losing that?
    2. AJ is only likely to improve, and Wlad is only likely to decline.
    3. He needs a knockout. It's clear that they are going to have close, debatable rounds. It's clear the fight will be in London again. Most observers had him up or even with AJ at the time of stoppage, but he was badly down on two of the scorecards. There is no way he would win a decision. Combined with #2, he just does not have a good chance to win.
    4. If he wins, to what end? I'm sure Hearn would have another rematch clause and would exercise it. Best case scenario is he's tied up fighting AJ until he's pushing 43. If he manages to ko AJ twice in a row, he's probably not going to be able to unify the belts afterward. So, in coming back his primary accomplishment may be destroying the career of a guy who otherwise looks set to add luster to Wlad's career through his success.

I just don't think it makes any sense for him to rematch AJ

Good points! I just think as smart as he is.. after watching the fight over he'll have an even better game plan going into the rematch and as strange as it sounds.. his confidence will be even better considering the praise his getting for his efforts AND almost taking Joshua out.

Look Joshua is a force no doubt! And he'll be good to go in the rematch too. But I just think Wladimir is the smarter boxer who will make the better adjustments.

No winging left hooks from the other end of the arena, concentrate on that jab a little more and shoot that 1-2 to the body to get Joshua spitting out that mouthpiece again.

    Thanks!

I just feel like even if he wins, he loses, though. He'll basically have to spend the next couple years knocking AJ out twice. If that happens, they will be brutal bouts, AJ may be finished as a force, making him an afterthought instead of the atg he looks poised to become. Wlad will be too old to do anything else with his career. The haters will have all the same criticisms they always had.

Whereas if he let's things be, AJ looks poised to at least get to Riddick Bowe level and maybe alot more, making Wlad's loss legacy building

Interesting post- you make some good points

Right After the fight, I thought Vlad should retire ---but now I'm thinking he needs to carry-on with the rematch
if he feels he can be competitive and possibly win

and who knows he may be able to learn from the first flight, adjust accordingly, and come out victorious. He was by no means steamrolled in the first fight-he was winning several rounds and dropped Josh with one hard shot ---- I now see it as a war that could be fought again

I would love to see a rematch

Keep in mind Vlad is not out to make Joshua's future look good- he's out to cement his own legacy before he retires for good

And rightfully so This is boxing

He was undone by a lucky punch and up to that point had inflicted more damage than Joshua. He was about to be robbed of course had that 11th round uppercut missed.

Wlad had a great showing but i think it was his last hurrah. I picked AJ by ko and i pick him in the rematch to win by ko even sooner and likely more convincingly next time. When was the last time an aging vet near the end of his career won a rematch against a new torch bearer?

Exactly! No rematch necessary, he had a great career and has cemented his legacy amongst the best of the HW division, and there's nothing left to prove! Enjoy life with that fine woman he's got!!

    1. He has looked awful in his last 3 fights. Unlike ever before.

    That's it.
