I agree to some extent, but you cannot deny that the competition which Ali and Lewis fought was stronger.

Wlad is good but he will never be top 10 ATG. People who claim he is even near that now do not know their boxing history. If you are a relatively new fan and you love Wlad that's cool. He's a good fighter. But there's no need to talk about ATGs and fighters you are not informed enough to comment on. Enjoy your guy for what he is, no need to pretend he's anything more. :good

Thats the problem when ranking Vlad - the fact of his brothers existance has diluted his resume - Vitali has helped him dominate the division -But he hasnt really dominated the division he has never fought his brother who is his most credible opponent - They are like a tag team avenging each other - Has any other boxer went so long without their nearest rival.
So , yes , the Klitchkos have dominated the era, but have done so as a team - so whatever their achievements they are the achievements of 2 men and should be judged that way - I also agree that it is shocking that David Haye ducks them so blatatntly , but by the same token, it is what they are doing to each other! I think Haye has clicked onto this fact that you can make alot of money by not fighting the best - The Klitschkos are doing this by not fighting each other.

To some extend, but if people want to punch holes in resumes, you can say that a prime Ali struggled with a 188 pound Jones who would be completely dominated by Wlad, was almost KO'ed and revived with illegal tactics against 186 pound Cooper, should have had two losses to Norton...Lewis was knocked out cold by a crack addict...I do regrad them as great fighters, but nostalgia makes a lot of people look at past heros as incomparable.

question: If you would be one of the Klitschkos, would you fight your brother? Boxing is not tennis, you know...

Yep. Totally agreed. "Don't touch the heroes of the past" seems to be a widespread opinion.

No I wouldnt and I dont think Vlad should - But facts are facts and Vlad is a victim of circumstance. This will always be a stumbling block for either of them when assessing their overall careers.
They will always be known for neither of them dominating their era - but both of them dominating it.
I dont even know which one is even the best out of the 2 of them in this era so it would take a leap of faith so insert tham highly in an ATG ranking.

    Fixed that for ya.

Also, who makes the ATG lists? Are they created by some super computer that runs 1,000 fights between every boxer ever to lace up the gloves and ranks according to wins?

Or are they unofficial personal rankings made by people who put who they want on there based on their own requirements?

Is there a guide we can consult? Maybe a link to the requirements created by the United Boxing League or something? A pamphlet perhaps?

In my view, each era's most dominant fighter in each weight division should be elected to the hall of fame. It's the only fair way to avoid era bias. If they had websites back in the 50s, I have no doubt this thread would be about Marciano right now because of how little credible competition was out there for him. But he's a hall of famer because he did what he's supposed to do - he dominated his era, the way Wlad and Vitali are doing now. I don't hold the strength of the era against a fighter because he has no control over that.

Will they be considered all time greats? Vitali, probably not. Wlad, it depends. There is no official designation for an All Time Great - each person decides for themselves. For that reason, ATG "status" is less about skill or resume, and more about how a boxer captures the public's fascination.

If Wlad were knocking everybody out in 4-5 rounds and growling in front of the camera like he's Ivan Drago during each fight, but still had the same resume, I think he would be a strong contender for an ATG for a lot of people. Tyson is considered an ATG by most people for that very reason, despite having a resume comparable in quality to Wlad.
