Why would an average Joe believe he can beat a Pro Fighter?

B.R. briefly touches on it at the start. He had an interesting story about Marciano but its not in this clip.

And Charlie Murphy talked about it as well. I like how he handled it.

The question is wich 'avarage Joe' against wich 'pro fighter'?
There are many different levels in avarage Joes and pro fighters. If you think you can beat Marciano you're obviously not the brightest spark, but if you're a big strong guy and you believe you can drop someone like Eric Crumble inside a round you're probably right.

There's a huge difference with a lot of other sports if it comes to boxing.
If you have a hell of a chin, and a hell of a punch you can get pretty far without having much talent.
The so called 'regular Joe' can have both those things from nature, just like Marciano had who was regulary in brawls before he became a pro and would have beaten quite a lot of pros before he became one himself.

I know of at least one famous fighter who got knocked out in a nightclub for hitting on someones girlfriend. That guy wasn't a boxer.

Because there are people like Charlie Zelenoff that call themselves pro fighters, who anybody with a pulse would beat.

I guess a lot of people here also forget what being a pro actually means.
It means you compete in boxingmatches for money. It doesn't say anything about talent, conditioning, strength, training hours or anything else. Only that you get paid for it.

If overweight Larry Buttface finds out he can't pay his rent/mortgage anymore and decides to take a few beatings for money, joins the local boxing club and passes the (probably very low key) medical test from the Backwather State Athletic Comission, he essentially is a pro right from that point on.

Does that suddenly make him so much stronger? No, that probably makes him one of the guys starting (more serious) pros feed on to pad their records.

But he still would be a pro.

Should have made it more specific but I thought the videos would clue you in: Champion level fighters like Oscar, Tyson and Marciano. Guys with Big Names.

Then again, I could see it from the other side. Sometimes size, strength, power, etc. can play a role. Pick on a small guy or get a lucky punch in. Then you have well trained fighters in various forms, even Military, that if they met a Pro {Name} fighter in the streets, he could possibly win because of what he can do and what the boxer may not be able to do.

I don't know. I was making it more simple. Average guy in the bar vs. Champion Caliber Fighters like Tyson, Marciano, etc.

There was also this great TV commercial years back with Evander Holyfield knocking a couch potato out. Just can't find it. Although I found a mention of it during my search. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/whitlock/030612.html
