The way I see it, there haven't been too many white American Heavyweights who've been very good for whatever reason. How many Heavyweight champions from that group have there been, even counting the 4-belt era, since Braddock was defeated in 1937? How many would there have been since the Sullivan days without a color line? How many were truly great, and who were they beating to prove it? This is mostly what Louis feasted on, and aside from Conn, who was tiny for the division, I don't see any reason to believe that Louis' era was any different in that regard. That era simply sucked for the most part IMO, and fighters like Lewis, the Klitschkos, Holyfield, Tyson, etc, would have been a massive step up for Louis.

It's not that Louis' size would prevent him from having a chance in, say, the 90s, although it wouldn't have helped. It's that the jump in competition would have been huge. There's no telling what that might look like. Questionable that Louis' chin holds up vs. Lewis, Tyson or Wlad. Those would be far different experiences than the supposed punchers of his day, like Tony Galento for example. Just my 2 cents...
