Why would Miguel Cotto take on such a dangerous threat in Antonio Margarito?

Pretty much the only decent and immediate option he had was Antonio Margarito.

I think the whole idea is for Cotto to fight and beat the biggest threats out there and then publicly try and shame PBF into fighting him by saying he is the one afraid to take risks not Miguel.

Cotto is a fighter, not a businessman. Floyd used to be a fighter but he turned into a businessman/boxer and thats why we haven't had Cotto vs Floyd yet. If both guys had the same mentality then the fight would have happened long ago.

Definately agreeing with you i think its his managements logic.........Basically clean out the division,i bet if he wins i wouldnt be suprised if they had him go after Wiliiams( if he stays at welter)

He's never signed a contract right away. His uncle/father negotiated for him and he has been shortchanged in the past by Arum and were making sure he got what was coming to him in regards to PPV revenue/Gate receipts. I would also say in part that not signing right away was to stir the Margarito people who in a way insulted the Cotto camp who had already were preparing to fight him last spring. Cotto said after he beat Quintana that he was going to beat Margarito in the post-press conference in the spring and they were waiting for that bout to materialize until Margarito and his people spring that surprise and go on to lose anyway. Don't think that they have forgotten about that.

Perhaps, but what if Margarito wins? Can you imagine what that will do to his market value? It will turn Margarito into a gigantic hype overnight. He'll be a national treasure in Mexico and a star in the United states. There are millions of dollars in it for Top Rank if Margarito manages to win.
