Why would Miguel Cotto take on such a dangerous threat in Antonio Margarito?

Exactly. He didn't sign immediately for Quintana, because they tried to pay him the same amount of cash he made for Malignaggi. He didn't sign immediately for the Mosley fight because he felt Top Rank was trying to low ball him, which was pretty much the same case with Margarito this year. But since Margarito is supposed to be some feared force once again, people made a big deal about him not signing the contract right away, trying to imply that he was afraid of Margarito, when no one barely made mention of him not signing right away for the Quintana and Mosley fights.

Yet, they seem to forget that Cotto-Margarito was good to go for June 2007, until Marg backed out of the deal and elected to fight Paul Williams instead.

    How easily they forget.

Actually it's only Cotto who has a title: the WBA welterweight championship. Margarito vacated the IBF title after being mandated to fight challenger Johsua Clottey.

its true hes hardly beaten anyone of note (Cintron and Clottey) has 5 losses was clearly beaten by Paul Williams and is very much not in the same league as Cotto in terms of opponents faced and beaten and quality of performances.

What comparing which opponents the fighters in question have beaten has nothing to do with a fight?

I think it has everything to do with it, what im saying is hes beaten many average fighters and the good ones he has faced his power has hardly been a factor (Cintron aside) he is overhyped, hence he will be destroyed by Cotto who has fought the much better competition and anyone who thinks Tony is going to win can have a avatar or 2 month ban bet with me.

    Any takers?

I'm not saying it wont be competitive but Cotto will make Tony look pedestrian with speed being the deciding factor. Remember how bad Soto (a fighter I like a lot) looked against Guzman. The speed difference isn't as big, but Cotto will engage more than Guzman and we all know Cotto throws crisp combinations.
