Why would Miguel Cotto take on such a dangerous threat in Antonio Margarito?

He had nowhere else to go. With Mayweather retired, Williams would be the only other choice and he's not in Arum's stable.

This was also due to some pressure from Bob Arum over Cotto's mediocre numbers. I have no doubts. Arum has a win/win here. If Margarito wins it cements his status as an elite in the division. If Cotto wins it further cements his status P4P and in the eyes of the boxing public. They could then make a DLH fight or even a Paul Williams fight with the lions share of the money and do well. Same could be said for Margarito.

Arum has a barnburner here and the timing is about as good as it gets. This needs to do good if not great numbers imo. The options are out there but this fight is almost a pre-requisite for all that to happen.

Cotto is taking the fight with Margarito because Margarito is not supposed to have any chance to win the fight.

Maybe not on this particular forum, LOL. The odds are tighter in this fight than they were for Judah or Mosley however, and the vast majority of the boxing media has Margarito in a landslide, apparently:

I like Margarito, he is a fun fighter to watch and tough as nails, but he is going to lose to Cotto IMO.

Cotto believes he can beat anybody in the WW division and that's why he's taking the fight. The rest is all margophiliac brainfarts. :beat

Margarito's only chance of winning is a knockout which is unlikely because his punches are wilder than Nick Noltes hair.

Most of the people who picked Margarito have him by KO. I have to disagree with you though. Margarito's activity could get him a decision. It's not like Cotto has the defensive skills to keep Margarito from scoring. That's if Cotto can stand up to the artillery thrown his way. If.
