O.K. I saw this somewhere else and copied because I thought it was a very interesting topic.

In other words, there is someone we think is better than you but we will still make you the mythical number 1.

The obvious answer is resume(resume is subjective btw).

However, while I can see resume influencing the FOTD, I don't see it as relevent in the pound for pound rankings.

    Thoughts:good

Because Vegas thinks he would win the fight. It'll be interesting to see how the line moves if/when the fight gets announced till fight night.

Size: Manny and Floyd are in the same weight class
Style: Ask MrTony80 and all the other Pac Fans Why Manny's Style(SouthPaw, speed, angles, workrate, power etc) spells bad news for Mayweather.

I know, but pac has had trouble with counter punchers.

And floyd has had problems with south paws.

But floyd couldn't even make 144, so he is definitely the bigger man.

I have no doubt that Floyd is bigger than Manny. Not because he couldn't make 144 though. Just look at the height and body mass.

Nevertheless what I have observed on esb is this:

    a) Floyd Fans choose Floyd.
    b) Pac Fans choose Pac.

    c) Fans who are not really Floyd or Pac fans choose Floyd
(The previous 3 statements are not absolute)

I also found it odd that he is p4p #1 but not #1 ww. I think flOyd is the favorite because it is always harder to be the favorite against a guy who is unbeaten after so many fights and to the casual fan might appear unbeatable

The reason Pac won the FOTD and is p4p #1 instead of Floyd, is because he's not as good as Floyd. It's counterintuitive, but it happens all the time.

Look at the NBA. Phil Jackson has a winning percentage of over .700, he has 13 finals appearences, his team has been to the playoffs every year, and he has a North American sports record 11 championships as a coach. Despite this, he's only won coach of the year one time, and that's when his Bulls won an NBA record 72 games. So why does Phil never get proper recognition? Simple, the bar is set real high for him. With the bar set so high, it's almost impossible for him to exceed expectations. As a result, lesser coaches often get more props because they are able to exceed much lower expectations.

The same prinicipal applies to Mayweather. The bar is set very high for him. It's almost impossible for him exceed expectations. There are probably no fights out there from 160 on down where Mayweather wouldn't be expected to win. The bar is now pretty high for Pacquiao as well, but it's still easier for him to exceed expectations. It's pretty interesting when you think about it. Even though Pacquiao is higher on most people's ATG list, him beating Mayweather would be considered a better win than Mayweather beating Pacquiao due to the fact that Mayweather is considered the better fighter.

The more I think about it, the more confusing it becomes.

Based on ring rankings we can assume the following:
As a welterweight Mayweather is better than Pacman.
In the pound for pound sense Pacman is better than Mayweather.

If they were not in the same weight class I could understand but they are in the same weight class.

PAc being the underdog is a non-issue for me. I relish the fact he'll be the underdog...it'll make the victory that much sweeter.

    Some interesting points.

Also I think Pacmans smaller size helps make his victories at welterweight more impressive. According to Naazim though Pacman is not really smaller(I disagree with Naazim on this but hey).

    I see your points though.
