Mccallum stepped up to MW in 85 and Hagler only fought once in 85,86,87. How come Hagler was only defending once a year and was there any demand for a Mccallum fight between 85-87? After Mike beat Jackson, Mccrory, and Curry surley a fight would have happened if Hagler had not lost to SRL? and SRL was just looking for payday superfights like hearns and duran...?
McCallum defended the 154-pound title regularly through 1985, 86 and 87. He had a few in-between-defenses fights at middleweight or thereabouts, but didn't step up to middle for good until 1988 when he fought (and lost to) Kalumbay.
:goodThis post is correct.Well said Saintpat. Not only that,Mugabi was ranked very high at middle, whereas McCallum wasn't quite on the radar at that point.
Hagler was retired before McCallum even campained at 160. Hagler was also retired when McCallum had his big win over Curry. Say Hagler wasn't beaten by SRL and happened to fight another year or two, he may have fought McCallum after Mike's impressive win over Curry. Or if Mike's win happened at an earlier time and he clamoured for Hagler they would have fought.
