How were they talking about the fight, mate? The Sky commentary made it out to be an absolute schooling which was ridiculous. Rivas had his successes and caused him problems including a hurtful knockdown which they also dismissed. Whyte was hurt and had to dig deep to survive that onslaught and win the fight. I hold my hand up and admit that I got it wrong. I thought Rivas would beat him although I felt I was right about Rivas not taking a backward step, standing in mid range & in the pocket making Whyte work very hard. I also said that Rivas would get pulled up a bit by the ref for leading in with his head. I felt Victor Loughlin killed the momentum in the 12th by pulling him up on this. Whyte deserved the win in the end and showed Joshua how you deal with the smaller fighter. However, I’ll add that our refereeing (& judging) in this country makes us just as daunting a prospect for a foreign fighter as the likes of Germany, Argentina etc. does for us. No wonder Ruiz doesn’t want to come here. I put this out to people on here... if you’re Ruiz, which British ref will allow him to work on the inside without constantly pulling him up for his work on the inside?
I went from watching the slow heavyweights to the Thurman fight and thought it was on fast forward lol! Let’s be brutally honest here, I doubt whyte will fight wilder of fury anytime soon, yes he’s mandatory but this is the corrupt wbc and this is boxing. Whyte is on a great run of wins here but really he’s not exactly walking through opponents, Parker and Rivas both almost took him out. I see fury and wilder beating him at this point
What!!!??? It was awfull!! Nick Halling and Alex Arthur are the worst commentary team I have ever heard. So, so, so boring with awful comments such as Dave Allen being in title contention & will "take some beating", and Price having the best jab in the heavyweight division. The broadcast itself was garbage. You can hardly hear any background noise. Granted, maybe that was because it was from a stream. Nothing was happening in between fights - The camera was just showing the ring from about 50 foot up. Was awful.
Rivas certainly is cut from a different cloth, and he proved last night that he is a serious contender, he has certainly climbed the rankings in my book and I reckon he should make a lot of top ten lists the next time we get a thread on it - which we are overdue by like two weeks? The shots Whyte caught Rivas with would have stopped MOST heavyweights, Rivas suprised the hell out of me - I said originally that Rivas would quit by the mid to the late rounds if he didn't get TKOd or KOd but he just kept coming like a terminator... I couldn't believe his grit.
Whyte said in a interview he wil fight once more before his title shot. Said his team will want to take an easy fight but he doesnt mind who he fights. Looking at the WBC current top 15 there is only two easy fights amongst them in Breazeale and Kownacki.
I think he deserves an easier tick over fight because he has fought way hard fights for little reward thus far... he is allowed to take a break now... if pussies like Fury are fightin Schwarz, and pussies like Wilder are rematching old blast from the past men
Whyte has to in the top 5, his resume of wins are more impressive than Wilders and Fury(who hasnt beaten anyone of note since wlad 4 years ago).
Dillian showed real class last night, mate. Rivas was a baffling opponent for him to voluntarily choose to fight. He could have easily took a lesser opponent, and I hope he does that later in the year because he needs to be fresh for Wilder/Fury. He has vulnerabilities, but all the heavyweights do. I think he uses his physical attributes better than Joshua uses his. I keep writing the lad off (this doesn’t mean I don’t support him) but he keeps proving me wrong. His jab was brilliant and he used it intelligently. He’s a nightmare for absolutely anyone in the division.
Well said Twenty, fully agree - let's hope he takes an easier fight next, he doesn't need all this mileage prior to a title shot. Every heavy has flaws as you say, but he showed yet more improvement yesterday!
LOL I don't know what's going on. I know I'm in a tiny minority (possibly the only person?) who scored this for Rivas (by 1 point only) and that's no problem, I'll concede to the majority there .... but I'm surprised people are talking as if this wasn't even a close fight. It was a very close fight and most of the rounds were very close. Adam Smith is mental to doubt the knockdown. .... and I just the read the fight report of bbc website and the report says Whyte "came close to stopping Rivas in round 2" ! WTF ?
