Suppose Gomez moved up to 126 a little earlier & challenged Featherweight kingpin Danny "Lil Red" Lopez 15 rounds.
I feel that Gomez lost a little at 126, though that may have been due to him dropping some nuances he had post-Sanchez. Lopez was tough as old boots and the naturally bigger guy. He would get to Gomez at some point, and, as one of the freakish punchers at the weight, I think he'd get Gomez out in about 7.
If Gomez darts in and out and uses movement, he wins a decision........HOWEVER, if he stands still long enough, Lopez will catch him and it's all over. Probably only a matter of time.
I had a lenghty debate about this matchup back in 2007 on boxrec, and since I can`t be bothered to rewrite everything I said here`s a link to the thread, name is Lausse: http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=72202
Good to see you are posting again RB.It is a joy when you find time to come on here. Also did you get my email? RB, do you think the match up would differ if we used a 122lb prime version of Gomez vs a featherweight Lopez?
That,s how I seen pintor-Gomez shaping up. With Lupe the great late round fighter. What a suprise terrific ending! But lopez is indeed strong down the stretch. & Gomez not quite the same at 126. Good call.
Gomez was ideal at 122...much as Monzon and Hagler were ideal at 160 and Mike Spinks at 175...I also don't think Gomez's power translated that well above 122 and that the taller, rangier, brutal punching Little Red would have found Gomez in the 13th or 14th and put his lights out, but not befoe getting outboxed and outhustled and maybe even dropped for a short count along the way. Gomez was never to be denied and as always, could end a fight at any time, but he wouldn't have until 13 or 14...maybe even 15...but he would have finally caught the great Gomez.
