An interesting article dug up on Yahoo! Sports with press row scores for the fight. Doesn't sound to me like Williams dominated anyone that night... Opinion varies on Margarito-Williams By Kevin Iole Sunday, Jul 15, 2007 12:03 am EDT CARSON, Calif. - The media covering the Paul Williams-Antonio Margarito WBO welterweight title fight had a varied opinion on the outcome: Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports: Margarito, 116-112 Tim Smith, New York Daily News: Draw, 114-114 Steve Springer, Los Angeles Times: Draw, 114-114 Bill Dwyre, Los Angeles Times: Margarito, 115-113 Steve Kim, MaxBoxing.com: Margarito, 115-113 Doug Fischer, MaxBoxing.com: Margarito, 115-113 Jerry Magee, San Diego Union-Tribune: Williams, 116-112 Robert Morales, Los Angeles Daily News: Williams, 115-113 Carlos Arias, Orange County Register: Williams, 115-113 David Avila, Riverside Press Enterprise: Draw, 114-114 Francisco Salazar, Fightnews.com: Draw, 114-114
Watch the fight. Williams beat Margarito clear as day. 8-4, possibly 9-3, and to counter the late start arguement, the 12th round was one-sided in favor of the Punisher. Margo got beat. Period. And he will have to make REAL tactical adjustments(Right hands down the pipe, using his body attack, working the uppercut, etc.) to win. Its not as simple as, start whupping ass earlier, folks. Otherwise, Margo wouldn't have gotten his ass whupped. I think Margarito can do it. A rematch with Paul Williams is a 50-50 fight. Margarito is capable of doing what needs to be done to beat Paul. Doing it, is gonna be hard, and I wont be betting money on him to do it. Margarito apologists are certainly justified in praising his dynamite win over Cotto. But Paul Williams BEAT Antonio, and it will always remain in the books that he BEAT Antonio, and the only way for the Tijuana Tornado to drop the serious stigma a wide points loss delivers, is to avenge that loss. I predict they will fight, that Margo wont duck him. But trying to erase the big L on Margo's record just because he impressively kayoed Cotto just won't work. Congratulations to the people who predicted Margarito's victory, excellent work!
i did watch it, live, not live there, but live on televison i remeber it being very close but feeling that williams edged it when he won the 12th round margaritto started to late
BULL****. Kevin Iole is a straight-up Margarita fan. Read all of his posts and articles. I was at the Home Depot Center and everyone there, including Margarito knew he had to win the 12th round BIG in order to have a chance. He came out there and got his ass TATOOED. Everyone there was quiet like church when the final bell rung, because they KNEW what had happened. Don't try to make the **** sound controversial, because the only thing controversial was the fact that it was scored so closely! HE NEEDS TO REDEEM HIMSELF!
Hmmm...terrible scoring in my opinion by those writers. I had it 8-4 Williams. Margarito needs to be more aggressive the next time around and not give away so many rounds.
The difference between watching it on TV and watching it ringside is that you can actually hear the punches being landed pretty well ringside. The press were swayed by the harder punching of Margarito. Williams threw alot of slaps and still couldn't keep Tony off of him. And as Tony started to pile on the pressure he was landing some thunderous shots. Those were what swayed the press to give Margarito the latter rounds. If they fight again Margarito will take it. Williams looks good from a TV/tape point of view but going on basic fight mentality, Williams looked the loser afterwards.
I was there. You definitely could feel that Margo was hitting him with some good shots in that 10th and 11th... But in the 12th, when it mattered the most, Paul came out and beat his ass. Paul knows goddamn well... and has said that Margarito is his toughest most demanding fight ever. But he also says that he wasn't close to being knocked out or dazed, just stung a few times. Williams is tough. He just bruises a lot easier than leatherface-ironchin. The judges who are trained not to base their scores on the reaction of the 95% Margo fans there, had it almost right. Let me clarify something. I don't think Margo is physically scared of Paul. That's ridiculous. BUT EVERYONE, INCLUDING MARGO HIMSELF, KNOWS THAT PAUL WOULD BE THE WORST MATCHUP FOR MARGARITO AS FAR AS WINNING THE BOUT. AND MARGO IS NOT INTERESTED IN LOSING TO THE SAME GUY TWICE, ESPECIALLY WHILST TRYING TO RIDE THIS MEDIA LOVE-FEST WAVE. BOB ARUM WILL NOT RISK IT.
See I would have no issues supporting this because you make some good points. My only hangup is the first Quintana fight. Williams really ****ed up there. IMO he should have never lost that fight and he really took the fight for granted. But for whatever reason, this cannot put him on terms with demanding an immediate rematch. Despite Margarito not taking that rematch, he has come out looking the better of the two, regardless of how controversial/not that fight was.
I don't care if Margarito knocked out 1974 Jack Johnson. You cannot erase what happened. If Paul's KO of Quintana can't erase an off night for him, how can Margo erase Paul's methodical ass-whippin unless he at least faces the guy again??? But yeah, Paul ****ed up against CQ. Had no business losing!
To me, the man who beat the man becomes the man is just stupid. I go on accomplishments over everything. Williams has one big win at welter over Margarito. And I guess you could make an argument for his one round knockout of Quintana. But that's where you draw the line. Margarito has been fighting top welters for years now. He just has been avoided by the top 5 or so. Until recently. Margarito didn't become the top guy because he beat Cotto. He became the top guy because he beat Cotto on the end of a string of impressive performances. Yes, even in losing to Williams he still came on strong at the end. We do this for Hopkins so it's only fair, right? Margarito: Clottey, Cintron, Cotto - wins going off the last 2 years. Williams: Margarito, Quintana - wins going off the last 2 years. Based on accomplishments, Williams needs one more fight. I think he should get Clottey seeing as though Margarito is gonna fight Judah. Don't get me wrong though. H2H I think Williams is his toughest fight. And like Williams, Margarito also knows that. I would like to see the rematch and it is number one for me. But for a guy who has been ring magazine top 10 for 386 weeks, he deserves to ride the love wave for a little bit. Take the hardest fight at the end, long as you take it!
All that is good and fine, but you seem to be missing one point. Oscar does not want to fight him. Floyd is retired. Why can't he fight the guys who want to fight him. Isn't that what he's known for in the first place? Do you really think it's fair for him to give ZAB a chance? Seriously, he's really a good fighter who is easy to like, but enough of the excuses already. This warrior should live up to his billing.
Margarito by knockout. Williams has refused Margarito a rematch for a long time, yet he expected, and got, an immediate rematch vs. the glass chinned little guy Quinatana. Margarito beat he crap out of Williams, that is why Williams did not allow a rematch. Double standard. Take a look at Williams' face after the fight, tells all.
Margarito won that fight it was a robbery. Williams just punch and grab to win on points he didn't beat anybody he just got a gift decision,Williams = Tony next victim. Margarito has no choice but to fight him again and he will win
