before the no mas fight my buddy was in the town that the fight was in he was in a casino and (this guy is a big wig so he got the best of everything) he tells me he went into a private room and there was duran sitting at a table with three hottie tricks a plate of blow and bottles of white liquor and it was very late in the evening early morning. long story short after he left he and his buddies went to every bookie they could find in any stae and bet the farm against duran and won a bundle at the no mas fight.
Well your buddy must be making that one up. Its well known Duran always been against drugs, many of his best friends died from overdose's and suffered with ill health because of drugs.
all i did was merely say what i was told. never said if it was true or not. just thought it was interesting
It is widely known, and even self-admitted, that he was partying very hard before the rematch. What exactly is meant by "partying" is up for debate.
Hard to imagine Duran ever betting against himself, especially considering the ramifications if he were ever caught.
His buddies (allegedly) bet against Duran. You misread. Also, I'll call BS on the whole "Duran was against drugs" thing right now.
I've read this many places. I think in four kings or hands of stone they have something about him being with this girl who was high on buds and he broke up with her because he didn't know whether it was his really company he enjoyed or the drugged sex. apocryphal blah blah blah
Let me clarify. I don't deny that he or his people may've said it, I just doubt strongly that he never partook in them during the height of his partying days.
Well, it was the 70's and 80's and he was big in Vegas, NY, and Latin America so the probability is very high. I don't think it's a stretch to say almost any top fighter at the time railed the white lady.
He's always been outspoken about his dislike towards drugs, read his books, watch his interviews on the subject.
