Wilder and Joshua since 2020 aren't that different

i was all ready to get on the righteous aj train here, but then i paused...deontay may look like a gangly teenaged girl when he fights and he is past his peak for sure, but there exists the possibllty that his power is real. factor in that aj's confidence is not what it once was and that he can be ignominiously KO'd...

yeah. i got aj 70/30 and i would NOT buy it as a ppv, but put it on a card i might buy or netflix or prime? sure i'll watch it.

 

IMO the 2010s was pretty close between them but AJ has been better in the 2020s.

 

Nah, AJ's run in the 2020's was still a bit better imo because he doesn't have a losing record, but they are indeed not that different.

AJ wins: Pulev, Franklin, Helenius, Wallin, Ngannou, Paul
AJ losses: Usyk x2, Dubois

Record: 6-3

Wilder wins: Helenius, Herndon, Chisora
Wilder's losses: Fury x2, Parker, Zhang

Record: 3-4

When it comes to the better wins, only Wallin was a consensus Top 10 guy out of the bunch and he still was rated only number 10, lol.
Pulev and Chisora were rated Top 10 by TBRB, while Chisora was also rated Top 10 by a couple of other independent outlets, excluding The Ring.
Helenius was also a nice win for Wilder, especially looking at how it looked.

If I was to rank these wins they would be:

1. Chisora (Wilder) [because he beat Wallin]
2. Wallin (AJ)
3. Helenius (Wilder)
4. Pulev (AJ) [you could argue he should be above Helenius]
5. Franklin (AJ)
6. Helenius (AJ)
7. Herndon (Wilder)
8. Ngannou (AJ) [you could argue he should be above Herndon since he almost beat Fury]

1410. Paul (AJ)

They both also only lost to Top 10 of the division. AJ lost to the best of this era and a Top 5 guy, while Wilder lost to 2 Top 10 guys.

Definitely not as much of a gap between them as in the 10's.

I would've been totally okay with Usyk taking on Wilder in a showcase fight instead of Verhoeven, he was more than entitled to do that. But a defence against a shot to **** Wilder after the farce against the kickboxer? That wouldn't be a good look.

To the point of the thread, Joshua and Wilder are more similar legacy-wise than many fans would like to admit, yeah.

 

He was a consenus Top 10 guy at the time, rated in all independent rankings as such and 3 out of 4 alphabet rankings. Poll from 2025 on the boxing forum doesn't change how he was perceived in 2023 by a boxing fraternity.

I really do hate how fans pretend the current condition of a fighter is the same as the condition of the same fighter 3 years ago.

You can try to rewrite history all you want, but the facts are, Wallin was rated Top 10 in The Ring, TBRB, Bad Left Hook, Top Heavywight Boxing and ESPN rankings, and on top of that he was rated Top 10 in 3 out of 4 sanctioning bodies rankings. He was also rated Top 10 by many users on this group. People's opinions in hindsight are irrelevant.

 

Both Glass Jawed. Both Mentally Weak. Both have very low Ring IQ’s.
If they were to fight now AJ by savage KO.

 

This is soap opera. Do you even like to watch a fight? Or you are following to live vicariously through your idols. Pretend they'd pull over to the bus stop and make room for you in the Maybach...

 

You can make all the mental gymnastics you want to. Wallin was seen as a consensus Top 10 guy at the time AJ fought him, including many of the posters on this site. You can cry about, but these are facts.
