First time against a masterful boxer as big as he is. I was surprised because a seasoned pro with an olympic bronze medal, who I'd seen knock out lesser opponents, had no answer to an elite big man.
Excellent post SDB! I know you hate Wilder, and that always makes it hard to admit something like that, but I've always thought you were one of the most reasonable and intelligent posters on here and I'm glad to see you showing it! I think Fury won, but don't have a big problem with the draw and see Fury being better prepared for Wilder and getting an easier win the second time around.
Wilder won my respect in terms of heart and stamina, and also the guts to stalk and pursue a much larger guy. Wilder is not just the hype job people thought. But it is true that his technique is really limited...his attack lacks any kind of variety. Even his forerunner, Earnie Shavers, had a much more well-rounded attack (but not the same chin or stamina). Still, the man was one second from slaying the giant; ironically, in England the fight might have been stopped.
Kudos to Wilder for getting a last minute knockdown on an elusive opponent that was boxing his ears off. His power is legit and his will to win is legit. Saying that, Fury was just outclassing him something awful in there, and that bodes extremely poorly for Wilder's chances in a rematch. Unless Fury half-asses it in training, or fights like an idiot second time round he'll likely do a Calzaghe Lacy on Wilder. He's got Wilder's timing down now and Wilder isn't going to be able to make any meaningful adjustments in the interim. Really impressed with Fury. He's an insane talent.
I have to agree. At 212 lbs banging with these big guys. It's impressive. And although his style is unorthodox it is effective...and exciting.
Thanks, you are on my following list as well! I have to admit that I've been biased against Wilder. Before the Ortiz fight, I had Ortiz winning due to his southpaw stance and chin to shoulder style. Wilder would have big problems finding Ortiz with his looping shot, but then I figured he would start to adjust and use the straight cross instead. Exactly what happened, but I didn't want it to happen. We saw a similar pattern this time where Fury ducked and Wilder adjusted. Before Wilder fought Washington I had Gerald winning because of Height, weight, and speed but Wilder has proved to be better than that. I've underrated Wilder's: 1. Chin. 2. Adaptability. 3. Legal power - straight right on the chin, -not forearm to the backside of the head. The thing with Wilder is that he is a very simple boxer but what he does he's great at. He is very explosive, tall, light which makes him cover distance very fast. He can vary the swing with the straight and both are potential KO shots. So both high guard and wide guard is risky against Wilder. A step back is also risky due to Wilder's speed and range. A duck under did also become risky in this fight etc... That's why he is a top tier fighter.
Does anyone feel like the WBC should be petitioned to give Wilder some sort of special award? Perhaps a 'I weighed much less than him' trophy? Or 'I knocked him down twice, surely that counts for something'? 'He got up on ten, that's almost a knock out'?? I just feel like his superhuman efforts against a fat rusty gypsy should be recognised in some way.
