Walking around the whole fight with his hands down pretty much getting jabbed and hit with a right hand at will. Zero strategy, no traps on the backfoot. Get rid of Finkel too. What moron would want Wilder to bulk up when his only assets are his athleticism and bullet like power generated from speed from a slender frame? Wilder is long overdue for a world class trainer. He still has something for the heavyweight division if he gets back down to 210 -220, utilizes basic fundamentals, has a trainer who develops a workable strategy for him and gets him to throw piston 1-2s. Id like to see Teddy Atlas train him for a couple fights to get his fundamentals up to scratch.
Bit late for that. If he can't defend and only knows how to throw a one-two at his age, there's not much anyone can do for him
Forget it. It's too late. Although I agree, he was far too heavy tonight. His power isn't muscular, its leverage from his lanky frame.
he needs to learn how to feint, and use his jab as a weapon. hes being relying on his 1-2 way too much the past few fighs.
If he hasnt realized this by now he never will though. Maybe the loss will wake him up but I doubt it. Ive seen in interviews where he practically says he doesnt believe in 'the sweet science'... that type of mentality usually doesnt yield great improvements.
Wilder doesnt throw a 1-2, he uses a poor pawing excuse for a jab and a loopy telegraphed overhand right. The only time Wilder throws a proper straight right hand is when he is KOing guys from walking them onto it off the backfoot. If he had a decent trainer, hed be throwing that straight right everytime he threw it, and after a stiff straight left jab.
His over confidence in his power finally cost him tonight. He badly needed a loss to teach him that he can't get away with average boxing skills, zero boxing strategy to bail him out in fights forever
Agreed ,trying to change Wilder at this point would be like trying to teach Joe Frazier how to stick and move for the Manilla fight.
I just don’t see Wilder being able to change. He is 34 year old boxer with fundamental boxing skill and a killer punch. By the time he gets better at boxing he will be pushing late 30s. There is no changing at this point. It ain’t going to get better cause his speed will go with age too.
