Could he have done it better? Sure, however put yourself in his mindset.

You're twenty, you just obliterated some poor dudes face in your first professional fight. You feel like a God. To rise above those feelings of being young and invincible takes a special breed of human being. A rare champion who has both the physical tools and mental strength needed to dominate and yet not be seduced into having a big ego that ignores anyone who tries to improve you and teach you new things for when the power doesn't work.

Wilder, much like Tyson was never going to be that guy. The Haggler type who is always in shape, always in training, always ready to go at a moments notice. No drugs, no alcohol, nothing but war mentality.

However, if at age twenty, Wilder was that guy enough to listen and had access to a Stewart like trainer he certainly would have achieved more. What wouldn't have happened is Wilder dominating for a decade against all comers. He has small legs, physical imperfections with his right hand etc etc.

Wilder could never be that guy.

I get your point, but I think if anything he did substantially well given his lack of skills. The fact that he got up to world class level, got a version of the belt and gave Fury hell is quite an accomplishment. I think we focus so much on fighters flaws, but fail to realize how tough it is to get to the level they are at. It's much easier to say what boxers should do, but if anyone has ever gotten into the ring can tell you it is easier said than done.

Maybe Wilder could have been better, but his best was pretty good.

Interesting. It actually makes me wonder whether an early professional setback (like Wlad against Sanders) might have improved Wilder's development in the long run. Wilder at least did try to make changes in Fight 3 against Fury; losing Fight 2 seemed to only make him more determined. (Albeit also somewhat stressed and paranoid.) Wilder might have bounced back from an early loss with enough time to really learn from it.

He made it to where he is through good managing, povetkin getting penalized with the meldonium allowing him to get out of russia and avoid that fight and his willpower plus athletic gifts. If he had discipline and was not arrogant he would have learned how to settle with the jab and know that once the time comes he could throw the bomb and end it. I was impressed with his first fight with stiverne because he boxed a lot in that fight and thought that he was going to be a great fighter with more time, boy was i wrong. He

    You know what?

You bring up a good point about Povetkin. We should talk about Wilder-Povetkin more.

Not enough threads on that one.

Wilder has lost to Fury and Fury only, nobody else has beat him, everybody else Wilder has fought he has found a way to beat them. It’s Wilders lack of boxing skills that has made him the rangey, unorthodox fighter that he his as well as his renowned knock out power in either hand. Wilder may not be to everybody’s taste but nobody can say he has not achieved well in his career and also the financial rewards that go with it .

It took a titan like Fury to end his reign

Do not write off rocket hand man yet

    Jarrel Miller
    Dillian Whyte
    Anthony Joshua

    Wilder can beat them all

    With this logic:

Add more punch power to Fury he will be best HW in history.
Add more stamina and chin to Joshua he will be best HW in history.
Add more reach to Usyk he will be best HW in history.

Wilder has poor stamina, IQ and technique. He has only punch power and fast hands. That's all.

A combination of athletic ability, power, careful matchmaking (bums and no hopers mainly) and a lot of hype made Wilder a rich man. A cherry-pick gone wrong caused the house of cards to come tumbling down. He wanted to beat a big name and a compromised Fury seemed like an easy target, perfect choice for a cherry picking punk with a big mouth. Unfortunately he couldn’t even beat a rusty version of Fury so he made lame excuses about a long count and went on to make excuses about his former trainer, Fury’s gloves, a heavy gimp suit, drugs in his water, a broken hand, another long count, in the next two fights in which he was KTFO. I’m sure there are people in the wilder camp who regret that cherry pick gone wrong. It’s okay, he will crush a can or two and the usual idiots will begin chirping again. It’s what they do best.
