I think what you are missing, is that Wilder defending against a hype-able guy in the US would have been a marketable fight.

For a US Heavyweight champ that is starting to get some name recognition to be in with a real contender would have been a big deal in NYC and actually sold tickets, attracted sponsors, built the PBC brand while actually not bleeding red ink. Not to mention a visible platform to showcase the undercard.

Typically when you invest millions in a fighter like Wilder, that is the type of scenario you work towards before putting him in a fight he might lose - when building a brand, seeing the "house guy" lose can even build credibility.

PBC gains nothing to send their prize guy over to the cold steppes of Russia. That chunk they get from Wilders purse is nothing compared to what has been already invested, let alone the opportunity cost or risk.

Kovalev must have some Russian Oligarch behind him. If they can outbid Haymon and Waddel & Reed?? Damn that's must be a lot of money those folks have.

Russian culture, particularly oligarch class culture is very oriented around masculinity. Prestige is the currency of those types of billionaires who have enough money that money is meaningless.

Few things are more prestigious in that environment than being able to dole out VIP passes and seating to your fellow oligarchs and political patrons to see a Russian championship level fighter.

Well, Haymon will likely get to air the fight on NBC or CBS without having to pay the purses as well.

If it airs on Saturday afternoon in May, great. Nothing really going on sports wise. Maybe they'll be able to air it before the Kentucky Derby?

And they fully expect "their prize" to come back with the belt and defend it again in September ... where he will (with the win) be even more marketable.

Also, looking at the bids, Haymon clearly didn't try to win the bid.

He's spent $3 million (and sometimes more) on a typical PBC network card. Bidding $5 million for this just means he was going to participate in the bid and let the Russians pay for this one ...

But, frankly, I think he believed (like most) they'd bid more. And I think they underbid, too, thinking he'd pay more.

Both look kind of dumb, given the winning total.

But Wilder and Haymon come out the winners. Wilder gets his career-high payday. Haymon will probably get the least expensive card he's ever aired.

I don't know what Ryabinsky said to Povetkin when it was announced. I doubt the nearly 37-year-old Povetkin was thrilled with his cut. If he loses, there are no more title fights in his future.

And you can hand out all the ringside seats you want to oligarchs, but if your old fighter feels like he's getting ripped off, and he's fighting the biggest puncher he's arguably ever faced ... I don't think all those oligarchs are going to go home happy.

As I mentioned earlier, Wilder's team is viewing this like the Tyson-Pinklon Thomas fight. Thomas was a former champ. He was the mandatory contender. But he wasn't the BIG FIGHT of Tyson's career.

In the end, Povetkin is just Wilder's MAY TITLE DEFENSE.

There will more than likely be a Wilder September Title defense. And maybe, before the year is out, a December title defense.

I think the people on this board have built the fight up more than even the promoters involved in the bid have.

Wilder's team, certainly, is approaching this as business as usual.

Well I think you are right about one thing, if Wilder wins then it's not that huge a deal in the long run just one date/card lost. While it would have been great for PBC to put on a big card around that time frame, it's not the end of the world.

I think you are wrong about them not trying though, 5mil is a respectable bid for the fight - and probably around the projected break even point give or take a half mil or so.

As it is, it probably wont end up marketed as a PBC fight - but rather a "SHO International". The undercard probably won't be televised in the US either, which always hurts rating. (Probably because most people just assume there will be one and are slow to tune in. That's just a guess, but it's a fact that one-bout shows tend to rate lower and unless the main event is Rigondeuax viewership tends to climb over course of telecast)

Since PBC doesn't gain anything, it's still a bad situation because it is a risky fight. But like you say, as long as Wilder does in fact win it won't be a major issue in the long term.

Personally I hope Wilder does win, a US Heavyweight champ that's viewed as legit would be a huge boon to US boxing market and Wilder can gain a lot of legitimacy by winning this bout.

why are you talking like haymon has the rights to televise this? he will have to purchase the rights to televise this fight off the russians and there will more than likely be a bidding war and the russians might not even deal with haymon

No doubt this goes 12 rounds
    Wilder by SD
We all know Russian will gas in round 7:deal

Wilder will fight from the outside and IMO win 8 of 12 rounds but with this taking place in Russia, I guess, we will see a razor scorecard with a SD:hat

anyone, heck they could decide not to even sell the rights to haymon out of spite, or only give it too him for a ridiculous price, your acting like haymon is getting it for free
