You can have success in boxing if you are carefully managed and can build a hype train. Broner is a 4 time world champion on paper.... this sport is a joke to be honest.
The Sconiers tape is like the Tim Dinsdale film ( lochness monster 1960 ) We just don,t know what happened
for one thing he wasn't the champ then. he'd probably massacre Sconiers in about ten seconds now. He's improved since then. As for the knockdown he got up that's all that matters.
time; soon, wilder will step up or get knocked out (or step up and get knocked out) we'll see what his chin is made of then
I'd like to see the Sconiers fight for sure to see what everyone has been raving about. If its anything like Dustin Nichols its probably ridiculous. That was his 13th fight as well, I'm not sure how much it matters now.
I'm working on getting it right now. My friend's friend as possession of it, but unfortunately I'm not sure if they can release it due to copyrights, even though it wasn't broadcasted at the time. As to the knockdown, it was legitimate and Wilder was on the edge of being ko'ed. He was very hurt. I just found a few links from people who were there. http://i58.tinypic.com/2cdbpyu.jpg "Olympic bronze medalist and undefeated heavyweight Deontay Wilder survived a second round knockdown before stopping journeyman Harold Sconiers 1:09 into the fourth round. I never want anything easy, explained Wilder following the fight. I dont want anything given to me." "I want to earn it. Wilder (13-0) worked the jab to open the first and coupled it with an occasional right hand. A Wilder left, followed by a barrage, sent Sconiers to a knee for the first knockdown of the fight. Wilder was using Sconiers for target practice in the second when Sconiers struck gold with a big right hand to the chin. Wilder dropped to the canvas as the bell sounded to end the round." "Undefeated heavyweights were also featured in separate bouts. In what looked like it would be a blowout on paper, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Deontay Wilder, was nearly shocked by unheralded veteran Harold Sconiers who entered the bout as a loser of 15 of his previous 18 bouts, but who was riding a two-fight winning streak, including an upset over Andre Purlette." "Sconiers, however, decided that merely surviving the first round was not enough and was able to box Wilder pretty evenly in the second round before catching him with a hard punch and flooring him. Wilder rose on very unsteady legs and if not for the bell sounding immediately, may have suffered a much worse fate."
Cool. Even if it was a legit knockdown, anyone can get careless and get caught. A hard flush punch from almost any professional fighter right on the point of the chin might put anyone down. That's basically one legit knockdown in 35 fights. Any reasonable person knows the Nichols thing was ridiculously overblown. That's not to shabby. We will just have to see how he responds in the future.
One good quality of Wilder is a quick recovery time when hurt. I think I've seen it several times now. He also has very good power. Make no mistake though. Sconiers is a total can that couldn't crack an egg. I've seen him box live several times. He is a terrible fighter and losing to him would've been catastrophic for Wilder.
Oh yeah no question it would have been devastating. Briggs' career almost got ruined when he lost to Darrol Wilson early on. His trainer dumped him and everything. Sounds like Wilder had a close call for sure. He may not be where he is at had he not gotten up. But, he's beaten way better fighters since Sconiers no question as well. So what it really means at this point doesn't seem to be much.
