Wilder starting boxing earlier or with a different trainer would make no difference

Maybe Pricey is going a teeny bit far, but I definitely agree he was so ridiculously protected that it allowed a completely unjustifiable reputation to grow around a quite average fighter.

Even now there's plenty on here that carry a torch for him as if he was ever anything more than a gatekeeper level fighter crushing journeymen, and often not particularly great ones at that...
I've always considered him vastly overrated, and long pointed to his complete refusal to get in the ring with the likes of Whyte, who was decent but never special, as evidence that even Wilder and/or his team knew he wasn't really all that.

It seems like revisionism only because the majority joined the cult - it doesn't change that they were always wrong.

If he started younger with a good trainer, he would have sacked them after his first defeat. Wilder did very well with the skills he had but his mentality would probably have been the factor which stopped him from being far better.

I dont get why Wilder fans are so obssesed with his status like some kind of unheralded ATG.

Cheez!!! I bet Wilder himself doesnt give a sheet for his status. He got into boxing not for glory but for the cold money.

Wilder made a fantastic con job posing as a legitimate fighter and made big money in the process. Great for him and his family.
Wilder fans should be glad for him and stop being so salty about his nediocre legacy. I suspect Wilder couldn't care less if he is considered a bum or not. He got millions of reasons to be happy and careless.

With Wilder even with a good coach I think it would be a real problem to get him to learn this way simply because he always had that equalizer with his power to fall back on and he simply accepted being out boxed for long periods because he had this belief he would land eventually and so he wouldn't have the motivation to try anything different. Even after his losses he just doubled down on landing the right hand. He simply never had that mindset. So yes I believe you are correct.
