before the Stiverne fight he lacked basic fundamentals such as a decent jab. The Stiverne fight came along and don’t get me wrong he was fighting a static target, basically a punch bag but his jab looked amazing. It looked as if he had gone away got his head down and actually learned how to box! Then last night it’s just gone again?
Wilder is a freak of nature but needs to fight Full Camp Hughie. Ortiz exposed Wilder lacks da funtametals
The left jab is usually not an effective tool against a southpaw. This is Boxing 101. It’s been there in his other fights against right-handers and was effective in spots against Ortiz.
This. Stiverne isn't a southpaw. Southpaws can be difficult to adjust to, which is why PAC in his prime was such a difficult opponent. Wilder was having a ton of trouble with straight left counters whenever he tried to use his right hand.
Yes this is true. The southpaw right jab often crosses path with the orthodox left jab and southpaw fighters in general are more adept at dealing with it as it's the norm for them unlike for the orthodox fighters. Wilder had success with his left jab when Ortiz started dropping his lead right hand. A southpaw should always adopt a higher guard because if that right hand drops it's easy for the orthodox fighter to jab over the right hand preventing the southpaw from throwing his jab as it's trapped under the trajectory of the left jab of the orthodox fighter. Wilder's jab isn't great though, he relies on being taller and rangier a lot which is why he had success with it vs Stiverne where he had a 5 inch height and 6 inch reach advantage. But against the equally sized Washington he was out jabbed too because Washington threw a more authoritative jab compared to the flicking jab of Wilder.
