Stiverne had a lot of training clips on instagram back then but the grim reality dawned upon us at the weigh-in. The animal activists in the crowd were screaming for Wilder to put the suffering obese hippo out of its misery.
In the first fight he was "comfortably" outboxed by Wilder. Let that sink in for a moment... outboxed by Wilder. He was never that good anyway, as had been on display in earlier fights, needing come from behind KO's against relatively low level opposition. Second fight he was inactive and out of shape too, which only made things so much worse.
Stiverne remember was meant to be fighting Breazeale and not Wilder originally, with Ortiz failing a doping test less than 5 weeks before the fight, Stiverne didn't have the proper preparation for the rematch, he'd likely been training complacently for Breazeale and then suddenly he was fighting Wilder. Stiverne obviously showed up out of shape and was now 3 years older and in your late 30's those 3 years can be the difference between being prime and shot. At 39, not fought for 2 whole years and 16lbs overweight he was clearly shot and never going to present the same resistance as he did in the first fight when he at least whipped himself in shape, had been active and had actually been training to fight Wilder for a full camp. Wilder had also improved from the first Stiverne fight 3 years before, he'd been fighting better opposition and had been training for the much more daunting task of Ortiz. So any idea that Wilder will give us a similar improvement in performance in the Fury rematch is wishful thinking. Wilder doesn't have 3 years to improve, he won't have an inactive, overweight and far inferior Fury in the rematch, in fact he'll likely have a leaner even more improved Fury.
McChicken nuggets happened. He is a short heavyweight like Sam Peter, and the bulking up, and eating got to a proportion where he ruined his metabolism. Same thing happened with Tua.
He had his moments in the first fight but it took it's toll. Since then he did he square root of sod all and just wasn't in any kind of shape to be boxing letting alone trying to get his belt back. He was done before the ink was wet on the rematch contract.
