Wilder has accepted George Foreman's offer to help train him. What do u think this does for Wilder vs Fury 3?
Mayweather would be a decent choice. Can't see anything George can teach him. Floyd can show him a few tricks, not change his style. As Breland stated when asked about the athleticism of Wilder he said "He's very awkward." Several times that tells me Breland is good enough to know, Wilder is as complete of a fighter as he will ever be.
Meanwhile Andy Ruiz is using the George Foreman lean mean fat reducing grilling machine to prepare for his next fight.
I was thinking Lennox Lewis would be a good choice from the people that volunteered to train him because he can work on the jab, uppercuts and hooks. Wilder needed to be first and throw when Fury comes in. They only have a few months at this point and what can you teach Wilder that he couldn't learn in years, it would have to be something subtle. The Mayweathers probably wouldn't have enough time to tweek his defense enough to make the desired difference. What comes naturally to Wilder is to wing shots and be aggressive after landing so I'm not mad at them choosing Foreman. He wouldn't have to change too much, just work on some subtle tricks that Foreman has learned from fighting all these all time greats, and how to just chop the body and change the angles of punches to be even more unpredictable, something that Wilder doesn't have to think too much about. Foreman could also help him mentally because he knows what it takes to come back from some devastating losses.
I really think Lewis would be the best to help him out over Foreman and Mayweather as well. What Wilder team should work on? First thing is Wilder needs to cut that 18.5 lbs he added for the 2nd fight. Legs and fatigue set in waaaay too early. Second thing, Wilder needs to disguise his straight right hand better. This is the equalizer for Fury. He has obviously studied when Wilder throws that right hand. Wilder never throws his right hand without throwing his left jab first. By doing that, Wilder is telegraphing his right hand every time, which gives Fury a chance to roll that right hand as he did about 3 times in that 2nd fight. Wilder needs do two things to disguise his right hand better. Throw his left jab, then feint the right hand, then step in and shoot the right straight hand. Another way is to double up on his jab, then shoot the straight right hand. It's simple for Wilder. He don't need to go learn a whole bunch of stuff. Add Feints, double up on his left jab and use his footwork to step in closer to land those big straight right hands. Fury will never expect Wilder to do that. He's set believing the jab will come followed by the straight right hand. If Wilder implement those two things, it's good night Fury! He will never see it coming.
@Caliboxing @Alo2006 choice is the best option. If he can learn anything at this point: It be from Lewis.
George is a salesman not a boxing trainer. If he's been brought on board, it's to sell Deontay Wilder to the American PPV purchasing public. The fight is in 6 months and George is going to have to persuade those consumers that the guy who got royally schooled, KTFO and then blamed his costume and threw his trainer under a bus is going to do the business. George can probably do this.
Why all the celebrity/ex boxer trainers when he can use a real trainer? I fail to see what Foreman will offer. Wilder needs an actual trainer that will drill into him simply a few of the core basics of boxing that will help him (hands up, use foot work, punch straight, work off the jab, 1-2, follow a game plan). Plodding forward with a crab defense hoping to land a telegraphed loopy right hand, Wilder will get destroyed worse than last time. Lack of discipline and coachability.
Foreman isn't the worst choice I could think of, he was far more technical than people gave him credit for especially during the 2nd half of his career and Wilder isn't ever going to outbox Fury so bringing on board a noted puncher isn't such a bad idea. Foreman knew how to frame opponents to move them into positions he wanted so he could unload his power and if anyone can make Wilder physically stronger it's Foreman as he did a lot of strength work. Foreman also had a very good jab, maybe he can give Wilder a more educated jab. So if Wilder can pick up some of Foreman's tricks and gain some size and strength he maybe able to become more adept on the inside and prevent Fury mauling him so much. But that's the issue isn't it, will Wilder listen. How will he cope with someone like Foreman who won't just kiss his ass and tell it to him straight what he does wrong and can Wilder cope with being told to do things he's not comfortable doing. He's lived in this little bubble for years where people just stroke his ego and tell him what what he wants to hear, once he's out of that echo chamber and Big George breaks his style down including all it's flaws, he might just refuse to listen.
Good points. That was not a good weight for him, better at a lighter weight for mobility and explosiveness. I agree with the double jabs, feints, and changing up the right hand. I remember watching the fight with Lennox commentating, and he had some good commentary about what Wilder should and shouldn't be doing. I also remember how Lennox fought Grant, who was a giant, was aggressive and tried to push Lennox back, of course, Fury is no Grant but still. Also like how he changed the angles of his right hand in the Rahman rematch.
Maybe George can help him learn how to set traps. Foreman set traps in a spirited but losing effort to Holyfield and later set traps in a winning effort with MM. Both times George was outclassed (speed!) but used what he had to maximum effect. The question is can Wilder's bird brain process the knowledge in a few months?
